Default honda trx450r or yamaha raptor 660???

i have a yamaha warrior right now but i want a new quad. ive been looking at the raptor 660 and trx450r and cant decide between the 2. i only trail ride. i like to go fast and do stupid stuff so i need something reliable and tough. which do you guys think is a more relaible quad? another thing i read is that the 450 doesnt have reverse. reverse is almost a necesity for me but i can probably make do without it if its more reliable than than the 660. any thoughts?

Early 660's had trans issue's from what most people say. '03 and under maybe? The Kawasaki 450 is the only 450 with reverse I believe. Other than that I'd say they are equally reliable. 450's are wider and more stable and make power in the high revs. 660's probably have more low end grunt but, do set higher and feel awkward to me. I'd go LTZ400 before 660 if it were me.

I ride lot's of trails and climb lots of hills. You learn to adapt and get around not having reverse. It's not a big deal for me.

As far as reliability. Don't listen to anyone tell you the 450's aren't reliable. They are as solid as they come. 450's are the race class on what all the inexperienced kids want. They buy them and never change oil, and treat them poorly. The only time I've seen 450's go down any machine would have done the same in those conditions.

Change the oil regularly and clean the air filter. Either machine will last. FYI the 660 does have dual carbs, well, some did anyway. Some, including myself hates dealing with dual carbs.

how quick are the z400s? i have never ridden one but i want something that is very fast off the line and has alot of low end torque. my warrior isnt quick enough for me anymore and i love riding fast too. anything with alot of torque and fast is what im looking for along with reliability because even though i take real good care of my stuff it will be pushed probably past its limits when i go out riding

Z's make good power. With a good exhaust they run but, if your gonna chase the HP monster go 450 or 700r. The 450 piped in a hot rod. Power in the high rpm range makes it feel that way. Like said they are designed to race so they handle hot rodding fine. The 660 and 700r make power in lower rpm range so they lug well. Just don't feel as hot rod'ish. Especially the top heavy 660. I'd reccomend riding a 660 before buying. I think youd be happy with 700 or 450 but, the 660 just has a different feel. You may love it but, id suggest feeling it out first.

They are all reliable machines.

All the 450 Sport ATV use the same performance motor used in there 450 class motocross motorcycles,so it will have a much shorter period (Hrs) before a rebuild. Its just the nature of the beast.

They do not give you big bore power out of a 450 without paying for it some where. The 660 will have the same power but it will under much less stress and more lazy about delivering it (More torque). No replacement for displacement.

The z400 and ex 400 will have much less power than a 450 but there reliability is much higher. No one expect a 450 Motocross to be a high mileage dependable trail bike, same goes with the 450 class performance ATVs.

In this case the trx450r has the same 1-cylinder, 4-stroke, Unicam, 4-valve, titanium 36 mm intake,BORE X STROKE 96 x 62.1 mm motor as the CRF 450R. See links below.

http://www.atvreviewnetwork.com/enth...cleCode=247662

They even have the same COMPRESSION RATIO 12:1

The only differance is the bike use a throttle body (EFI) and the ATV uses a Carb by the looks of things.

I hang out with some serious Motocross guys and all the exspect out of there 450s (Any brand) is 120 hrs before rebuild time.

TLC knows his stuff. The last thing I want to do is argue with him but.......

I disagree completely. If you are going to be on a track with ***** to the wall for hours at a time maybe.. But, I put 120+ hours on mine a year easily. Im on an '04, bro on an '05 also ride with an '06 and 2 other '05's. NONE have had a rebuild. We have 1 '06 that was rebuilt after it sank. Another 09 kawi that will probably need it after an idiot busted a water bottle he was carrying in the airbox! TWICE! These things are certainly not losing power. If they are it's so miniscule I can't tell the difference from any of the newer ones we ride or drag race.

If these things needed rebuilt every 200 hours I think there would be enough complaints out there that nobody would buy them. My brother as well as myself had more issues with our 400ex's than our 450's. Headlight assembly had to be replaced, timing chain replaced, CDI box replaced. On my 450, water pump and what turned out to be minor jetting issue.

The 450's are just higher compression and built for speed as a corvette. I wouldn't expect a corvette to need a rebuild any sooner then a silverado 1500 unless its running 7000rpm's around a track for hours on end. Take care of you quad and it will last regardless of what you buy.
