I'm looking to buy my first atv in the next few months and would like some input. I have spent some time on a few different ones here and there. I have two I am considering right now.

2005 Yamaha raptor 660 special edition in excellent shape! never beaten on always babied. mostly rode in Atlanta on trails. everything about this quad is in perfect shape from the no cracked or broken plastics, motor in excellent shape very strong running. tires have 85%+ thread left.
This quad has:
stage 2 hot cams
rejetted
k and n air filter
aftermarket Nerf bars
upgraded aftermarket front bumper (not on in picture, put on before last ride)
upgraded aftermarket rear bumper (not on in picture, put on before last ride)
new oil and coolant
Hole Shot tires
and more...

2005 Polaris Predator 500-
2005 Polaris Predator 500. Troy Lee special edition. Master motorcycle/ATV/snowmobile mechanic owned. Brand new top end. Runs and shifts excellent. Fox shocks. Looks great. Great running ATV. $3300
So what I want to know is what the pros and cons are to each and what do you think of the asking price of each? I will be doing trail rides on dedicated trails in northern Michigan.

The Raptor 660 has a lot of torque and is a bit tall and top heavy feeling. They are decent quads, but at that price I would opt for something else UNLESS you were getting something with upgraded shocks and a wider a-arm/axle setup.
The Pred, well 2005 was the first year of reverse and that would be the earliest model year I would consider. Overall not a bad machine, but they tend to get ratted out if you don't take care of them quicker than Japanese made They also tend to have personalities. Kind of like British made cars have personalities if you catch my drift. I would not touch one at that price.
My take on these is both are decent machines, but they need about a 1k price drop.
For about $2500.00 you should be able to find a nice 400EX or possibly even a Z400. While neither is going to have the top speed of the open classers mentioned above, they will handle worlds better. Both are still current production models so oem and aftermarket parts are plentiful(the Rap and Pred aren't hard to find parts for now in all fairness.) Put the $$ saved into a good helmet, chest protector, goggles, boots. etc. and go have some fun.

Thanks thats the stuff I was looking to hear. I just switched over from the Jeep world and am trying to figure this out before I buy something. Most of my time spent on an atv has been on a Polaris Trailblazer 250. I liked it but not sure if its what I want to end up owning.

I agree with both comments. I have been riding all my life (almost 30 yrs) and never bought a modded quad. At least not engine mods. I bought 1 because it was a deal not worth passing up but I was still unhappy, because the way it was dialed in was incorrect and there is no way of knowing exactly what was put inside the motor unless you tear it apart. That said, stick to stock, reliable quads. You can find 400ex parts anywhere. Another good all around quad is the yamaha warrior. They made them for a very longtime because they just run. I have a 1993 warrior that ran better than a 2002 blaster I had and it starts every time, without exception. I hear there is a lot of maintanence with Polaris. There are a lot of ltz400's out there and I rarely hear bad things about them as well.
