KTM XC 525 http://www.totalmotorcycle.com/ATV-Q...M-525XCATV.htm
That way you do not need to upgrade in the future because you started at the top.

And he'll have to be happy with it because he will be paying it off for the next 10 years !!.......how about something a bit more affordable for a 14 yr old, like a good used 400ex, easily modded for more power, or a KFX 400, liquid cooled and reliable, I'd stay away from the 450 racers, they are fast and fun, but require a lot more upkeep because of the high performance design of the motor. There are lots of good used 400 cc class sport quads out there that are affordable, reliable and fun. Plus, there are a TON of good used and cheap new mod parts for the 400ex and the Suzuki/Kawasaki 400 sport quads. You didnt say what your budget was, so maybe the KTM is in your price range (about 8k new) but I'm guessing you are saving chore money and part time job money, and are looking to get into quads for a bit less money. Read up on what each quad has going for it, and start learning to turn a wrench here and there, keeping a quad running is half the fun of owning one !!

I have been thinking about whether to get a 450 or 400 and a really like kawasaki but do you got any sites besides Craigslist to look for good used quads. My price range is from about 1500 to about 4000

We do have our own Classified section with quads and parts for sale. check that out. You can check auctions, newspapers for private sales, and check Craigslist in neighboring cities, sometimes people close to you list in bigger towns to get more coverage. Check other ATV websites for their want ad sections, lots of members put quads on there. If you check all your dealerships, they will often have older sport quads taken in on trade out back, just check them out to make sure they arent all beat up, if you get one before they go through it and put in on the floor, you may save some money by doing a little work on your own.

What would be better for me though a 400 Honda or a trx450r I live in California and will be on track a lot but also be riding a lot of trails which would be better for doing both of those. And also I am a rookie rider I had an atv about four years ago and it was an automatic so I have no experience with the clutch so which would be better for me the 400ex Honda or 450 trx Honda.

That choice would be up to you ( and hopefully, at your age, your parents). the 450 is head and shoulders above the 400ex in power, ride and handling, but along with that is the higher cost of upkeep, keeping the valves adjusted, and those race type motors do require a top end rebuild a lot sooner than the 400ex air cooled motors, which are basically bullet proof when properly cared for. I would ride the 400ex for a few years, you can mod it for performance and suspension a little at a time if you want. then when your skill levels are up there, moving up to a 450 would be much easier.
