Default Question about what atv I should get.

I am looking to get a quad for trail riding but not real sure what to get. I am new to riding. I am 20yrs old and about 6ft 200lb. Cant spend a lot, so used is a have to. Any recommendations about which atv I should get. What size motor? Which atvs seems to hold up the best after hard use? Any info/anwser is greatly appreciated. Thanks , logan.

You can usually get a good deal on a used Polaris Sportsman 500. Not the fastest quad out there but you can do just about anything with it. Had one previous to my Can-Am. Liked it a lot. Only traded it in because I needed a little more power for riding in the snow.

I guess you are looking to do some mudding? It would really help if we knew what type of quad you are looking for, what type of riding you do, and roughly how much you want to spend.

I really like to trail ride and something that can handle some mud is a have to. I would think a utility quad would be best. I would prefer to spend under 4000. Thanks.

I've only ever run Kawasaki so I can only tell you about them, which probably isn't helpful. A utility is the way to go far as I'm concerned too. My only advice for buying used is use your eyes and ears (not just to hear how the engine sounds but to hear what the previous owner has to say).

pretty much any 4x4 with a front locker will work. Personally, in your situation i would look for a Yamaha Big Bear 400. Tough as they come, inexpensive to buy and operate, and ready to mud. They do use a more traditional foot shifter and gearbox, but that just endears them even more to me. Honorable mention to the older Kawasaki Prairie lineup. Serious power, good handling, but the solid rear axle will hold the back a bit in the mud due to ground clearance. I don't see a lot of these used, but they are in your price range.

IRS (independent rear suspension) will give you more ground clearance than a SRA (solid rear axle). A 400 or 500 will have enough power for almost anything. A front locker is a must for me. That includes every major brand except Honda, who finally put it on a 2014 model which is out of your price range.
