Best sport quad for 1500-2000

2001 is the only year 660 that had tranny issues. Going on 13 years now, if it has been ridden at all either the tranny is good or it has been fixed. I look at this as almost a non issue at this point. Besides, with a good service manual replacing transmission gears is surprisingly easy on most of these machines.

every 660 i have rode with is missing a gear and one the clutch wasnt right and was slipping something like that, so thats why i said that about the 660's ill stick by what i said, i would stay away from 660's and if you dont have the money for a stock 700 raptor (when yamaha got the raptor right) then i would go with a stock z400

So a lightweight, responsive, well suspended machine sucks on trails? You buy a 700 to go fast. If you are using any significant portion of that power a 450 would also be appropriate. Any slower and you might be better off with a 250/300 class machine. Now there are some good reasons to avoid a race machine such as harsher ride or increased maintenance, but they only suck on trails if you are putt putting along.

Well, op asked about a 450. What kind of breakdowns do you see? Suspension and brakes are the same YFZ vs Raptor. Look at all the endurance races, GNCC, WORKS, BITD, all dominated by 450s. In 9 years of ownership, my YFZ left me stranded one time that wasn't caused by a crash or poor prep. That was caused by a worn wiring harness I didn't catch beforehand. Rebuild them before they blow and you can run any of these for a looonnng time. Like my 250R working on 30 years old. Also a great trail machine btw. Maybe your riding buddies need a better maintenance program.

I asked about the 450s because I know someone with a Honda 450 and has not had any problems with it. Most of the 450s around here are out of my price range or they are beat up but occasionally one will come along in my price range that has been taken good care of. Also the Honda 400ex are easy to find and good prices on them around here. What kind of problems do these have? I know a couple people that have these and don't seem to have any problems with them
