Default Another "New Guy" Thread - Need Help Please!

Hey everyone,

I've been reading on here for a little while and there seems to be some good information, and you guys seem pretty open to new people!

Long story short, I grew up on ATV's, rode them from ages 5-14, when I had a bad accident on a trail one day that literally almost killed me. At that time, I had a (totaled) brand new Suzuki Quadsport 160.

Fast forward 11 years, I'm ready to get back into trail riding, so I'm looking for some lost-cost (used) options for a sport ATV. I'm 5'4", 125lbs, so I'm pretty small. The riding will be mostly trails, around my area they consist mostly of woods, river beds, thick mud, water, and lots of rocks and hills. I know a utility would serve best, however I respectfully do not want one as of now. I believe a sport will be able to get me through most of the terrain.

Being out of the "game" for so long, I have no idea what's current in the market. I'll list some requirements that I would like, hopefully they can be met...

Sport ATV
Reverse Gear
~$2-3k used
Blue/Black/White in color

Right now I'm thinking Yamaha Raptor 350/700. I want some power, but being small, I don't want too much! I'm a very safety conscious rider and don't do wheelies and don't do jumps. That said, I don't want to buy something and then find out I'm disappointed with the power.

I would also like to list Fuel-Injection under the requirements.

Welcome to the forums.

Honestly, I don't think you're going to find a fuel injected sport quad for that money. Not 100% sure, but I don't know of any sport quad under 450 cc that has fuel injection. The larger bores are the Raptor 700 and the Honda 700xx. Maybe some other sport riders can pipe in. I personally haven't seen a fuel injected sport quad for the kind of money you're willing to spend.

I was under the impression that most sport-ATV's now-a-days were EFI?

There are several Raptor 700's and even an 08' Polaris 525 near me that are ~$3-3,500, that are 2007-2009 models. There's a few Raptor 660's on there as well, but those are obviously older, and I think for another $500-1,000, I would rather have a newer 700.

What am I missing? Are these all non-EFI?

Fuel injection is nice but a good running quad with a carb isn't hard to start. Just have to choke it and let it warm up when the engine is cold. Honda 400ex would be a good choice. Tons of used ones available and can find a good one for $2000 or less, at least close to where I live. The older ones didn't have reverse but anything about 2004 or newer has reverse. Suzuki Z400 would be another good one, slightly more power and slightly more expensive and reverse as well. Both have more than adequate power for trail riding and are very tough and reliable.

The Polaris Outlaw 525 had a KTM engine in it. Super fast. I believe it was a carburetor though. The Raptor 700 is fuel injected. Not sure about the older 660.

Thanks guys, I'm pretty much set on a Raptor 700 at this point in time.
