Default honda 400 rebuild:(

well as some of you know i bought my son a 400 in april, well short part of a long tell is there was a bad bearing in the engine. took it to the dealer i use to have the thing bored to a 416 easy job i thought, but since i was going to redo both ds's i figured i wouldn't have time to get to it for the 4 july weekend. well we found the bad bearing on the crank so we had to split the cases so i figured for a extra 250 i'd have the thing stroked also this process went great until they told me we couldn't get new rod bearings for the honda and i had to buy a new crank and rod, well $300 and 2 days later all was back on track, well powroll is doing the work so they said two weeks to get the crank done, well two days later i go to there shop to get the cylinder and the crank is done this is about 10 days before the 4th well we missed the 4th they couldn't get the machine to run well last week was used because they thought the cdi was bad wrong, now they think they need the manual to check everything i was certain they didn't have one, and now they confirmed my thoughts. well i thought about going and just getting the thing but i kind of need to let them finish so they have to stand behind what they have done. after reading some of the problems others have had i highly recommend people check out who they use.

Man, sorry to hear your still having problems on the 400. I would definetly be asking for some sort of discount considering your patients. Lord knows i would have lost all of mine.

Keep us posted on how it goes.

Kenny

Did the recheck the timing and make sure they did not do what I posted before? No manual......if I lived near, I would stop by and show the Yahoos how too properly set the time for your machine! I used too have an old 400ex manual laying around, if your mechanic needs it (LMAO), I will send it too him so he can get your sons ride back in action. Good luck and keep us posted.

sandman this may sound like a strange thing to check but when i put a k&n on the wifes 440 we jetted it to a 160main and it ran good but when i removed the lid completely and jetted up to a 172 main it would not start at all.you would think that it would have signs similar to a flooded engine but it just would not start.so i finally ended putting in a 165 and it runs perfectly from top to bottom and it starts easily also.like i said before this may not seem logical and i am sure someone will disagree but on our 440 that is what it took to make it run. i am not sure why a change from a 165 to a 172 would keep it from starting but it did and i couldnt deny that was the problem when i installed the 165 and it fired right up.the funny thing was is that the wife is the one that suggested that the problem may be in the new jetting ,(lucky guess?).

turns out it was the compression release on the cam took it off and it fired right up, and man does it sound good, little man is all smiles, that would be great to run it with cathys 440 a few times and see what the difference is, if you friend is going to be there that would be great to see him and her run then have her run alexs machine to see if there is a difference.

i think i know what the outcome would be with alex being so light but i am sure cathy will give it a go.if you have not seen the new yfz run yet you will be impressed as i was last weekend. they are going to be very fast when they are piped because the stock one i saw was beating everyone off the line and keeping up with the piped banshees at the top of the hill.
