Default 04 DS's - 2 Different Oil Filters

I have an 04 X which I purchased two oil filters for. When I changed my oil for the first time, I could see the filter I purchased wasn't the right size. I called the dealer and they asked for my model number (it's on the frame). I was told there are two different oil filters in the 04 models (size differences (length)). My DS has the long (3/34") filter.

Just an FYI for those purchasing oil filters. I was lucky that I could get the filter so I can ride this weekend.

That should say 3 and 3/4" long.

Default 04 DS's - 2 Different Oil Filters

Are you sure the dealer meant that the 2004 Baja X models have two oil filters? The 2000 DS' came with a short filter, and everything 2001 and newer has longer filters, which I believe may just be 3.75". (I have never measured or thought to.) Anyone with a 2000 DS can and should upgrade to the later model oil filter cover so that they can use the longer filter. (A bigger filter means more filtration, and that is never a bad thing!)

I'm personally still looking for a place where I can buy a few of the DS filters in bulk for a discounted price. I have two DS' and that means $16 in oil filters from the dealer any time I want to chage the oil. I know some guys have two or even three DS' so I'm not the only one.

No, I'm not sure.

I told the parts guy that I have an 04 X and he said he needed the model number too. The guy told me that there are two different filters for the 04 DS's. BTW, in the 04 handbook the figures (pictures) show the shorter cover for the shorter oil filter. I have the taller (longer) cover. You made a good recommendation to the masses, replacement of the cover and use of the longer oil filter results in more oil filtration.

for the first oil change in my 04 ds, a 2 3/4" filter came out of the engine. the factory ships the ds in the crate with engine oil and a filter? if yes, and the 04's have a 3 3/4 filter, i should have had one in my ds. also, when i went to 2 different bomb dealers and bought a filter for 04, they gave me a 2 3/4 filter. part number #420 256 188.

Javex is correct, the 04 DS filter length is 2.75" long, not 3.75" as I wrote earlier. The part number he listed is the correct part number for the 04 DS models.

I only wanted to point out that the 04 DS had a longer (different part number) then the earlier DS models. I purchased two filters and the parts guy sold me the wrong (earlier model filters) filters. The 04 filter is about 30% larger. Just a heads up to the guys and gals with 04 models.

Best Regards,

From my experiences, the 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 all use the same oil filters. It is 2.75 in long. They did change the stock number this year for some reason.
The old number P711256188 and new number 420256188 (Champion S1461748) Be sure to change you oil filter o-ring and the plug washer each time to prevent leaks. Hope that helps
