Default Gearing on a stock 04' Baja X?

I checked the gears on my X and counted 40 in the rear and 16 in the front. I was under the impression that stock DS650s came with 14 in the front. Is this new for 04' models? Is it just a Baja and Baja X change? My X is VERY wheelie prone due to the shorter rear swing arm and lighter front end. I have to take off slower and play catch up in almost all of my drag races and pass them on the top end. I want to take off at higher throttle so I don't get any studder because of taking off to slow and I wan't to keep and or increase my top end speed. Do they make a 17 tooth counter shaft sprocket to increase my top end and take a little off the bottom? Is that the route to go? Please help. JON

SIDEWINDER sprockets and chains 630-513-1000 they can get you any combo you want. i like the 14/40 combo with a second gear start for drag racing w/22" razors, or my 23" magnum hauler sand tire.

I should gear down in the front? I thought that gives you more out of the hole but decreases your top speed. I am already to prone to wheelies as it is with the shorter rear swing arm.

i don't know if you'r riding sand or dirt? but yes going smaller in front will make it quicker out of the hole and slower on top. do you start out in 2nd gear or first. hole shooting in 2nd will let you get out way ahead of the pack and one more gear (short drags) should get it done. again i like the 14/40 for this reason, the taller 16-17 sprockets (front gear) make the machine feel to sluggish, and then you almost have to start out in 1st gear making wheelies more of a problem. my opion only, go out and try leaving in 2nd(with a 14 front sprocket) slipping the clutch some and you will be shocked how fast you leave and low little tire spin you'll have. go luck.
