what protects my quads metal best from road calcium and salt? i have been spraying only the steel parts (not aluminum) with wd 40. will the aluminum parts corrode as well or do i only have to protect the steel from corrosion?

I would clean and dry the components on your quad your the most concerned with and then mask off adjacent plastics and use a decent clear coat on the metal. The axle will shine up real nice with a little elbow grease (and a little ingenuity) and will stay shiny for a good bit of time under the clear coating...

After we get back from the dunes I wash the bikes as normal then before I wipe them down I spray them with Turtel Wax spray wax. Kinda like at the coin operated car wash, it comes in a plastic sprayer that hooks to a garden hose and I just hose them down. It keeps the rust off everything Not sure if it really hurts anything but this is a trick I learned with street bikes, the bolt heads and such would get rusty very fast without the spray wax.
