I replaced mine last year & if I recall correctly, the bearings & seals were about $65. Rememebr, you need two. I ordered 2 from the dealership thinking one would be a spare but when it came time to get them in it turned out two were needed, 2 come in a set, that is. I guess the idiots at the parts counter thought one would be enough.

I replaced my entire carrier. I went with the RAD billet carrier and got away from the Tapered Bearings. My carrier was pretty hammered after the bearings went out.

I your carrier is good. just pry out seals with pry bar, punch out bearings by sticking a punch through the opisite side of the carrier. for install to prevent damage and make it easier to get the bearings back in. you should put them in a freezer for a few minutes. I think the service manual also says to put the carrier in the oven, but I am not possitive on that. as mentioned earlier, you can probably pick the bearings up at a auto parts store cheaper than a dealer. I did this for a different machine and they were able to cross reference the number on the bearing. they were like $9.00 a peace.

thanks! hopefully the carrier isn't shot. i haven't had a chance to ride it much but the other day i got the idea to put the backend on a stand and put it in gear with it running to polish the axle. i was just going to use a piece of ribbon sand paper and let the axel turn but it was moving pretty bad in the carrier so i shut it down hopeing i could get away with just bearings. guess i will see this weekend. thanks for all the info!

Default Axle bearings?

well i'm stumpped now! i disassembled the axle and carrier tonight and found nothing that looked worn? the bearings looked good and showed no wear so did the races and the axle. the seals were in great shape to. before i tor it down i was able to move the axle side to side about 1/4" but could move it front to back about an inch at the wheels. this is to much right? when i had it on the stand with it in gear the axle would rattle and flop around pretty good. when i took it apart i noticed there were some clip rings that hold the sproket holder and the disc brake rotor in place but when i let the holders slid out to the clips the bearing don't stay tight against the race. i don't have a service manual and figured this can't be any harded than a 9" ford but it seems to be whopping my butt now. any ideas why the baering arn't fitting tight in the race? is there some shims i might be missing? any help from you upstanding very smart helpful members would be greatly appreciated! di i mention how talentedyou all are too thanks everyone!

It sounds like the preload on the bearings may have just been out of adjustment. The big nut on the left hand side of the carrier determines the preload on the bearings. A lot of people have loose bearings and just tighten them up. To do this like a monual says you have to buy a big crowfoot wrench from your dealer, or just guess with a big set of pliers. If everything looks good inside I would try this.

do not use a crows foot to adj. bearing preload. hand tighten adj. nut counter clockwise to zero bearing end play. and tighten adj. nut lock screw to 10 n.m

Since you've got it apart and everything looks savvy...might as well grease her up fresh and be good for the next 10 to 12 mos, eh?
