Default DIY Turbo system

KMS will be offering do-it-yourself turbo systems. The EFI can be purchased separately for around $1200-$1400 and the price will be going down soon.
The Turbo can be purchased with whatever components you want or don't, and you can fab your own parts or get a complete system if you don't have a machine shop at your disposal. For folks that purchase parts or systems to build Turbo bikes they will have access to an exclusive DIY Turbo website with step by step instructions on how to properly build a Turbo bike. So now a DS or raptor Turbo EFI can be built in stages and depending on how good you are with your hands( to build plenum, all plumbing a header and collector), an EFI Turbo could be had for around $2500.

Why spend the money on fuel injection? Set the carbs or carb for blow thru. Any body out there try this with there set up? (External Fuel pump- boost referencing regulator?)

try going thru a set of whoops with a turbo blow through carb and see what happens - very erratic performance, the carb has to be sealed air tight so you don't lose boost pressure at any point, this includes sealing off the throttle shaft ,making the vent boost sensitive and sealing off the float bowl over flow. Carbs are very doable if you are willing to compromise some performance and smooth engine operation in the rough stuff. Peak power would be about the same with a well tuned EFI or carb but the EFI would always rule on the hills!
EFI done right is the best fuel system to use on Turbos, unless you wanna mess with rejetting everytime you change boost levels.

Thanks. I was wondering because one of my friends runs a blow thru carb on his single turbo mustang, and has no problems. I myself have a twin turbo mustang which is fuel injected. So I am looking at this from the automotive perspective. How did the turbo street bikes of the mid 80's hold up? I know what boost can do for performance, so my ds just might be boosted in the future. There is a reason why turbo cars are dominating these days. Take the NMRA Billy Gliden had to drop out of pro 5.0 because his nitrous car couldn't be competitive with the turbo guys.

i got a hold of kms yesterday. they quoted me 1600 for the complete fuel injection. the system sounds like a very complete system, but the ecm is mapped for a bone stock ds. if you have mods you have to have it dynoed and the ecm reclibrated. they give you the software to do it but if you dont have a local shop capable of dynoing and progrsamming an ecm, you might be in some trouble.

Not to step on a great possible system here, but. Ive been calling and emailing KMS for about 5 months now, since I first heard about their product. Not one friggen call or email in return. Not even just to say, we are working on it, its not done, or thank for your interest. I have to question wether or not they will even answer the phone to service their own product. Just my 2 cents. Dont get me wrong, I would love to have their system, thats my entire reason for trying to contact them. But it is poor poor business to just blow off potential customers.

Well, maybe my 4 cents

Gary

I don't know why they don't answer their e-mails, I originally sent them a coupla of e-mails and received no reply either, then I found Kellys phone number and communication has been very good to excellent. Kelly has spent a good 5 hours over the past 6 weeks on numerous phone calls, some discussing technical aspects of the turbo system others turn into BS sessions.
I would guess that he is swamped and is working on getting all his customers and company bikes ready for 4SW. His release date originally for the DS turbo system was end of January and knowing Kelly as I do, he doesn't want to promote the kits until he is 100% ready, there will be some of his bikes racing at 4SW so in the next 10 days or so there will be various reports on how well his product perfoms. I have enjoyed working with KMS greatly, just give them time to get their ducks in a row.
