I use alot of Rotella. Really good stuff!!! I also like mobile1 and GTX. Had very good luck with all of them. Valvoline is a different story.

Hey Doc, I just bought a bunch of Valvoline 4stroke oil, should I pitch it? or did you just have a problem with the regular oil?

mystereid, oops I typed the wrong oil. I ment Pensoil. I went from Rotella to Pensoil, and bam, started to burn oil. Then went back to Rotella, and when I went to check the oil it was full at the change interval. I had a friend that had the same experiance. He owned a shop and alot of his customers would come back within a month and complain that he shorted them a quart of oil on the change!!!! He changed to Delo and that stopped the complaints.

I have not tried Valvoline. Sorry for the confusion.

Keep in mine that some oils seem to burn more. I don't really think there is a bad oil on the market today. Just better ones.

No I never tried Rotella.

By the way, check your oil tank screen frequently for blockage!!!!!!!!

The DS doesn't need an oil cooler for non-racing, it's built into the dry sump system. I measure the oil temperature of the oil in the tank after the returned oil is de-aireated, which is the temperature going into the oil pump. I don't measure the oil at it's hottest point upon exit from the motor. The highest I've seen so far is 130-140 degrees, and it takes a while to get there. But I don't ride continuously for long periods. This was with coolant at 200 degrees in 70 degree weather, running turbo at high boost (100+ HP) with no intercooler on alcohol.

I just started to have the same problem. Ive been using Golden Spectro 10w-40 non synthetic since I bought the quad. This problem has just started to occur within the last few months. Could it be anything else besides the oil? The pressue is fine when the quad is cold.
I have a oil gauge and when the oil is hot the pressure reads around 30psi.

If there's no coolant or gas getting in the oil, then it's probably the oil that has a poor viscosity index. Synthetic oil maintains viscosity better at temperature. Try different oil. Be sure it's JASO MA rated if using synthetic.

I just checked the viscosity specs @ 40C for Klotz 15W50 MX4, Mobil 1 20w50 vtwin, and Spectro 4 10w-40.

Mobil 1 20w50 vtwin = 130.0 cSt @ 40C

Klotz 15W50 MX4 = 100.0 cSt @ 40C

Spectro 4 10w-40 = 97.4 cSt @ 40C

The Mobil 1 20w50 vtwin viscosity is 30% higher and solved my low oil pressure problem. The Spectro looks like it has the same viscosity problem as the Klotz.

Scooby what was the pressure reading at idle when the oil got hot. I was also wondering how often you have to change main bearings in the turbo engine.
