ds headporting
#1
does any one have any info on head porting. i am taking my head off to do valve seals. and i was thinking about porting the head, i am familiar with porting cast iron car heads. with the ds head is it a matter of removing matieral or just cleaning up the ports. the other thing is that i have stock cams so is porting a bad idea if i do not have the cams to go with it. i do plan on doing cams some day.

Wow , I thought you would get some replies to this. I've never had this head off so I couldn't tell you if there are any easy to spot flaws but everything I've read says most of a good port job is gained just by port matching. The 4 valve bike heads I've looked at have looked well designed to me, compared to some of the messes in automobile heads. Check out the exhaust gaskets and carb boot as well. Please post more if you dig into it.

If its ported right you will definately gain hp. Efficient porting and small cams make the widest range of horsepower and torque.

With what size valves? At what lift? What was the low-lift #'s?

MrBigiron- From the few i have sen in bobs shop it does not need much material removed to make a good improvement. A good clean up and smooth out some areas and zoom, zoom. If mr. HP messes with it add a few more zooms.

You can flow mega cfm through a stovepipe, but that won't equal horsepower OR how quickly it builds to horsepower, OR mid range and bottom end. High numbers on a flow bench DOES NOT equal more power. You have to be able to get it in quickly with high velocity.
