A few years back I was aspiring to be 1 but thats all over now.The few mechanics i know I wish they would told me then what know now bout the trade.THe money isnt what its cracked up to be long hours,ya bust ya hands an back an are exposed to chemicals that are bad for You on a regular basis. You gotta deal w dicky customers who some are just impossible.I can go on an on but im gonna stop so I dont start a pissing contest w any 1 or have some 1 tell me no no ts not lke that.It just wasnt for me an im glad now I look back an cirmunstances 3 years ago went the way that they did.If your thinking bout getting to it as a rookie forget it unless ya know or have family in it pck a different career.I would say if ya dont mind tinkering an not looking to make a killin go for it.If all ya see are $$$ signs forget it ,unless ya own the business youll kill yourself to make a fortune i this ever changin business that lets just say left me w a big debt an very sour taste in my mouth like a bad marriage.Another thing I dont believe is theyll tell ya they only break even which is bs cause any 1 in business is in it for money an if your breaking even ya might as well work in wawa.

You've really got to work the system at a dealership, especially on warranty repairs. I wasn't willing to do that so I found a good job at fleet level. I work for Avis Rent A car, we do all our own warranty work and gm reimburses us for the flat rate. I however get paid by the hour, I have access to everything that I had at the dealer including training. We work first hand with gm engineers on correcting problems we see with there vehicles seeing how we get a lot of the new cars first and get quite a few miles on them in a hurry. That makes it really fun, plus most of the stuff I work on is clean and I don't have to deal with the customers. There are guys that make 6 figures at dealerships, but it's a rat race. The technology is changing fast with onstar, drive by wire, steer by wire and even braking by wire. Also with the growing popularity of hybrid vehicles electrical expertise is a must.

no problem. in the begging it is extreamly difficult to make money working on vehicles. number one problem is everyone thinks they know somthing about cars. so the garages that are hiring mechanics have to weed out thoes who dont know and thoes who do. so most of the time you will start out at low pay doing smaller jobs like oil changes and brakes untill you can get the chance to prove your abillity. anything you learn in a book or class room will not help you work on cars. the only thing that will is experience. it is very expensive to make a profession in mechanics. the shop i run we work on everything bmw, volvo, domestic, asian, i mean everything. i have over 30,000 dollars rapped up in just my tool box alone. so you have to spend alot on tools which makes it tuff. because now your not making alot of money and you have to spen a majority of it on tools, with out the right tools you can not prove your ability. see what i am getting at. and thats where alot of people get out of the bussiness, they do not want to spend the money on the tools they need, so the shop owner will not give raises or oppertunitys to thoes who have to borrow tools. i run a shop, belive me i know what i am talking. so you have to put in alot of time and money to start making it back. your money is better spent on tools rather than on schooling. if you are in to performance than working on cars is not for you. fixing the everyday driver is by far not performance work. it is even toughefer to get in to performance than it is to get in to regualr mechanics work due to the demand. i started out at 5 dollars and hour running a tow truck. but you have to put in alot of time and learn from the guys ahead of you. cars are changing very rapidly right now so the baack yard mechanic will be a thing of the past.

I went to School at Weber State University and received my Degree in Automotive Service Technologies. This program is also known as the A.S.E.P. program thru General Motors. Basiclly when you are done you are a Factory Trained GM Mechanic. Great school and you also get a full year of Practical experiance. You will start out making around 35 to 50K a year.
