Default Hillshooter question

Alright, I am sick of embarrasing myself. I am learning to climb steep dunes (backside Sand Mt. Nevada) and twice a friggin stalled when down shifting from 3rd to 2nd. Now here I am having to back down for 10 minutes. What am I missing? This never happens when I down shift except on these real steep hills. Do you guys stay on the throttle through the shift? Do you not clutch and just kick down? Will that kill the tranny at full throttle? Your guidance is appreciated.

Gear down to a 14 or 15 tooth front sproket and stay on the throttle when shifting up steep hills, but DEFINATLY use the clutch. Not using the clutch tears stuff up.

I had the exact same issue. now with the lectron and a 15t primary, no need for down shifting when climbing.

you could always just try the 15t to start, they're only like $12 at RMATV

My bike only has a pipe, and a 15 tooth counter, other than that all stock. I was having the same problem when I first got the DS, coming from 2 strokes. The cure for me was short shifting it a bit. If I got close to tapping the rev limiter, it had a hard time shifting. I started short shifting now it's smooth for me.

Your lucky you didn't get rearended yet

I love those hills. It sounds like everything said here is right. You need to keep teh R's up. What is your RPM when you are downshifting?

I suggest a 15/42 gear combo - the 15/43 is a little better but, you will need a longer chain with that set-up.

Is your air filter directly mounted? That will add about 3-4 HP and as long as you don't ride in the mud you will be fine (living where you do, I can't immagine riding in an mud!)

Should be a good group of us at Sand Mt. Easter Weekend. I'll be on a yellow DS that does pretty good on the hill. I usually have a black triangle flag with yellow and orange flames on it.
