Why would the 14:1 be a poor choice for trails?

Well for starters its NOT hard to go 70-100 miles from the truck out in the middle of now where. Is someone going to pack gas ? If you go that far its hard to mess around so you dont wast gas. With the lower compresseion you can play all you want, AND get gas at local ma and pa stations that you find a long the trail. Maybe CA your trails have Seven11's at every intersecion but here in WI/MN that is not the case, if you run out its a damn long walk.

When I think of trail riding, I think of trails within tree's with short pursts of open area. But Mainly 1st/2nd gear and alot of clutching and braking. 14:1 compression is hard on the motor, and at slow speeds I would think your engine would be on the HOT side. Alky will help keep the temp down , but again you have hardly any range with alky. A 14:1 Alky motor is not an "trial" motor. and it shouldnt be expected to perform well in the trials. IMO.

Bigger.

Well, that is not true for my style. Our trails allow us to be in 3-5 gear. They are windy but they are wide, COULD ride side by side but is risky. They are up to 12 feet wide. VERY VERY FEW trails need 1-2nd gear, they might be special adventure trails. I assue that in other places trails riding is like GNCC racing but not here.
