I've talked to a few fellow truck drivers whose tanks were so oxidized that they had to sand them down before they could start buffing, but these were older trucks turned into show rigs....I think as long as you never hafta polish up the aluminum again getting it powder coated would be a fantastic idea. Kinda hard to buff coated metal, though......

Hey duneme on a more serious note if you take TEC and brush it on let it set for a hour or so it will take off all the coating on the cases. TEC is used to strip airplanes and is mean be carefull. but then your polish work will be a lot easier !!! because it also purifies the alum surface.

Where can I get this airplane stripper? TEC??

I'm going to give it a go myself. I have an extra clutch cover and magneto cover so, plenty of time to work the covers without any down time.

I'd like to know where to get that stuff too. I'm gonna have a few months over the summer when it's too hot to ride to do this.

you can get aviation stripper at most auto parts stores. if you want a really deep shin try using jewlers polish on your last step and use a slow speed buffer. you can use a scotch brite pad for some of the sanding, it works pretty good after you have all the rough spots out.
