wheelie question
#1
how far back can you go on a DS? I have been practicing wheeiles, I can get the frontend up but I am having a hard time holding a wheeile. can the DS be stood up on the grab bar while doin a wheelie or will it flip over backwards?? I don't think I can ride a wheelie b/c I am not going high enough but I am scared of flipping over backwards. thanks!!!

I ride slow wheelies and am almost stopped moving just balancing when I do them right. I also end up standing it up and end up laying on the ground alot too. It is not that hard to pull a wheelie on a DS. If you don't weigh a lot just make sure you have lots of traction. It won't go on over unless you are going uphill or doing something dumb. Make sure your exhaust doesn't hang too low or out too far. Have fun and don't worry about falling off, it doesn't hurt that bad.

it seems the balance point is farther back than most quads. i think because there is more weight in the front than the rear. i have draged the rear grab bar and still not gone over. you can feel it when you hit the balance point.

I guess I just need more practice, I also guess I won't be afraid to fall on my butt!!!
my goal is to be able to ride wheelies as long as I can, then maybe be able to shift while riding a wheelie, maybe...
oh yeah, what works best for me is to pop the clutch in 1st gear to get the frontend up. I find if I am riding in first and just gun it and pull on the handlebars, by the time the frontend gets up the engine is screaming and I have a hard time riding a wheelie any distance at all. I do need a surface with good traction or the wheels just spin.
any other suggestions??

the ds likes to be verticle!!! stand it up chuck. start off with 1st gear pulls practice getting it all the way up ( you will feel it start to get light, just keep you'r right foot on the rear brake incase it starts to go over to far and stomp on the brake if you feel like it's coming over) the hard part is convincing you'r self that verticle is alright. ok now you'r ready for the next gear: forget the clutch just let off the gas a touch and clicker into 2nd keeping it as high up as possible. the best place to do this stuff is at the dunes because you can go to far and fall off the back and it won't hurt. next class we will discuse the power wheelie

that riding wheelie up hill isn't dumb that is a great place to learn the balance point, ask bigslim, he had one wrestling match and now he can wheelie on demand, i actually think he wants a motorcycle he rides on two wheels so much.

If u feel like u are going to go over to far just hit ur back brake and it will bring the front end down very quickly. Lance

dondiesel444,
you got to be right back as far as you can on the back comfertbly. that will give you good leaverage. as said keep foot on rear brake. Also Ive totaled my curent grab bar its week. my new one has slight reinforcement and a new orange paint job. I like stand up wheelies as you can see in my picks I can ride for a long time. it also helps when I do sit down wheelies cuz I know right where the balance point is. and as said you can get her to come to a complete stop and take off again. try some stand up ones you will like it, a little nerve racking at first but it get ez real fast.

when i was just starting to wheelie, sandman told me to do it up a hill. of course i fell off the back and he had to help get the bike off me, but it was a starting point. easiest thing to do is clutch it out of second. start in first and the engine will be racing by the time you get it up. just start in second from a very slow speed and clutch it and you will be doing them in no time. i can ride a wheelie on my ds better than i can on any 400ex and they are supposed to be wheeliing machines

lunch time baby, get that bike at 12oclock. we are adicted to wheelies. it seems like when ever we go rideing we cant waite to find open spots to do wheelies. my friends have a couple of dvx 400s, i can wheelie then pups for a mile. they come up easy in 2nd gear. my ds is another story. for me it comes up no problem in 1st gear. i can pull it up nice, like 11oclock and ride it for a bit, but then i have to shift, and always loose it. 2nd gear comes up ok, but by the time i am at 11oclock, i am going too fast for the wheelie bar to save me. any advice on how to shift during a wheelie would be much appreciated. my advice to you is to start in 1st and bang a 12oclock . pull it straight up and come to a complete stop completly verticle. its the only way to get over the fear. the only damage will be a few scrapes on the wheelie bar. battle wounds, thats all. after that when you are going a little too high, tap the rear brake, it will bring you right down. when you can feather the throttle and tap the brake, you should be able to go for a while. good luck.
