Default Buying used and don't want to get ripped off!

Looking for some help with the purchase of a 2001 ds 650.
Okay here come the stupid questions
How do I know it's no a stolen quad?
Where is the VIN # on the 2001 ds 650?

Also what should I look at before I purchase?

Thanks in advance

I'd suggest looking at the air filter to see if it's clean and in good shape. Take it off, and run your finger around the intake. If there's dirt, or grime beware, it may need a top end, etc. Lift up on the front end, so the tires come off the ground alittle. Look for slop in the front shock bushings. It's like $50.00 to replace these, so if they're in bad shape haggle down on the price. Also look at the chain, if it's wore out, that will cost you some "chang" to replace too. Use the wear items to get the best price you can. My VIN is on the bottom frame rail, on a paper sticker. Call the DMV in your area, and give them these #'s. Also, be sure to get a bill of sale with the VIN #'s on it, as well as the sellers signature. Check to see if your state requires a Notary's stamp, and signature on the title as well.

Thanks for the help
I looked at and rode the quad yesterday.
Looked to be in good shape.
1. Owner said he had the fan problem fixed at the dealer. But I will try the wire trick.
2. Didn't try that.
3. Axle looked good w/ no play.
4. started on the 1st try sounded good to me nice and smooth. I turned off and on a couple times and it fired up evey time.
5. Rode it up and down the street a couple time and every thing seemed to be working great.
6. Red light worked as you stated
7. $3600.00
It looked like it could use some new tires and it had a small 1 1/2 inch tear on the side of the seat.
Owner said the tire are the originals.
I will have to check the air filter and the shock bushing on the next visit.
The chain looked good but seemed to me to be a little loose? It should not be to tight or to loose RIGHT???
Any thing i could look for in that area. The chain roller had some wear but did not look as if it need to be replace right now
I will also check out the VIN info

THANKS for your help guys
What do you guys think about the price? The seller was pretty firm when I tried to talk him down.

3600 is a good price in some area's of the US.

If you buy the quad, the first thing you should do it clean the Oil tank screen. Most poeple dont know to check this , and motors have been lost cause of oil starvation, from poor circulation.

The DS sounds strong. if it runs and looks grood then I would say 3600 is fair. JMO.

Ive been looking into these for awhile now and in the west, I think Bigger is spot on. $3600 is a very fair price for the quad even with the tear and worn tires. I have seen 01's going for between 3500 and 4500 so I think he is on the low side for where your at. I would hop on it.

With the 2001, try to get into some soft stuff so you can rev it up and launch in first then shift to second. Keep the revs up and shift with authority! If it pops out of second or doesn't go into second try it again. Best to do this once the oil is good an hot.

The shift fork in the 2000-2001 (maybe even 2002) was a weak point and many on here have had to replace the shift fork

Probably not an issue.

I would change the chain roller as soon as I got it home! James Lucky has them in their catalog.

Also, may want to remove the front plastic and check the head-light. One of the brackets can easily be broken and you wouldn't know it. Headlight is about $80 if I remember right!

Look at my pics of my old 03 DS650 Baja, i sold it for $4500, had over a grand in mods on it. If your not in a big hurry to buy, keep your eyes open for an idiot college student like me who sells stuff for dirt cheap because they want something else. few more things to look at.
1. check the oil
2. check the cluch lever, see if there's no more ajustment left.
3. sprocets and chain
4. do a compresstion test ( Yea I do them all the time, most say yes)
5. sorry about the spelling, I'm working on it
6. ask him if he do his own wrencing, if not then were does he take it to.
7. take a friend with you that knows alot about them. (This is always best)
