overheating problem, please help

alright this is what happened. a bunch of buddies and I went riding today. About 10 minutes into the day i noticed my temp light came on. so I immediately turned the machine off. the fan never came on. I thought "wow this is weird" so one of my buddies immediatly thought i blew a fuse. So we looked for a good 10 minutes, (couldnt find it, ive only had this bike for about 1 month so please dont laugh). oh well. Went to start it and the light went off. I thought to myself, "alright that was a fluke its not goin to happen again". started driving and about 15 -20 minutes later, same thing. tried to chase the fan wires to see if one was cut or something. all good. decided to unplug the switch where the black and blue wires from the fan plug into, ran a wire from the switch right to the battery to see if the fan would work. The fan turned on. so now we really needed to find the fuse. finally found it after a good 15 minutes of looking. saw that the blue 15 amp fuse was blown. replaced it and thought "nice, all fixed. put it all back together to finish the day riding. 30 later light came on again. checked the fuse and is was still good. The fuse never blew again after it over heated the last 3 or 4 times. Let it sit then started it up and rode again. did this about 2 more times before i said screw this im goin home.
the light only came on if i was either riding really slow or stopped. when i was cruising fast it wouldnt come on. The whole day the only time the fan came on was when we jumped it and rean it straight to the battery. all my other buddies fans came on after riding slow or if they got stuck and tried to rev it to get out. They were coming on normally like they supposed to do.
so obviously something had to of blown the fuse, the only other thing i can think of it being is the relay. The one on the side where the choke it right next to where the fan wires plug in.
anyone have any other ideas????? The coolant level was perfect and the oil level was also good, oh, its an 03 ds650

It is the thermostatic fan switch. It is on the right side of the motor attached to the thermostat housing. To get you buy just unplug the two wires that go in the back of the switch and put a jumper wire between them. Then just order one from your dealer, about $28. When you put the new one in make sure you silicone where the wires go so water doesn't get in there.

Well i had the same exact problem you have. What i did is bought a switch from auto zone for like $6. Got some wire ran it from the battery to the switch and then hooked the hot wire on the fan to the other prong and grounded the black wire from the fan to the frame. Works great and havent had any problems since. It is kind of cool also when u get ready to drag race and u flip that switch everyboby thinks u are turning the NOS on. LMAO. the thermostatic fan switch on the thermostat housing. There is two plugs goin into that. There is one plug at the top of it and if you are looking at it so the rear tires are on your left there is a plug on the left side. which one?
so that caused the fuse to blow?
its not the relay???

Most likely it's the thermostatic switch. This weekend I bought a cheap rocker switch and connected both wires to it. When I felt the DS was hot I ran the fan on. Last weekend I had the same problem as you. Since I put the switch ( I didn't want to waste a beautiful sunday not riding so while I'm waiting for the thermos switch to come in I rigged this rocker switch for a quick fix) no more red light and no heating issues. Even when I get my thermostatic switch I will probably keep the switch on just so it doesn't hamper my day in the future.
Jiffy also if you PM me and if your e-mail can hold anything under 7 megs I can send you a microfiche of the DS parts which shows you all the part numbers of that switch. You can order all DS parts relatively cheap from Parker Yamaha.

i have a switch for my fan also i put the switch for the nitrous under the seat i just reach under and flip and act like i had a itch[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img] sort of did i guess it is fun.

i am just going to buy both the thermostatic switches and the relay. i would rather have all three of them to if only replace one and it happens again in the trails i wont have to worry about it. just rather do all threee at once.

As a final check I would check the plug with a test light or volt meter, one side should have 12 volts the other not (with the swich on I think) you should be able to jump it at this point and the fan run, don't think there's a relay

where the black and blue wires from the fan plug in. there is a little black box right above it with a 4 prong plug goin into it. i traced those wires and i am pretty sure they go to the fan.
