Default DS overheating

The bike runs great but after you ride for a little while the red light will start flashing and the fan wont kick on. You kill it and let it cool down and then you can go again. Ok you would think that its the fan motor but we unhooked it and wired up to the battery and it worked fine. Anyone have any ideas?? Its a 2000 model if that makes any difference.

Check the TEMPERATURE SENDER Unplug temperature sender connectors.
Unscrew temperature sender.
Test
Using a multimeter, measure the resistance between
both temperature sender connectors.
The multimeter should indicate an infinite resistance
(O.L.), if not change the temperature sender.
If the resistance is infinite (O.L.), heat the temperature
sender, above 95°C (203°F). The resistance
should be 0.1. If not, change the temperature
sender.

the red light is also for low oil pressure. there is an oil pressure sensor near the oil filter housing. the 2000 models had some bad sensors and were recalled, that might be the problem, BUT DON"T ASSUME THAT AND CONTINUE TO RUN THE MOTOR AND BURN IT UP.

check for loose connection at red light bulb also.

you should also clean the inline oil screen at the oil tank outlet hose barb, it can get plugged and restrict oil flow to the motor!
