Default hmmm what to do. (new carb....)

We just got back from little sahara utah a couple weeks back, and i was running my bike pretty rich. (i wanted to be on the safe side...) so i figured since it was rich thats why my DS was a bit LOW on power (or so it seemed) as even on some of the really steep stuff i couldnt downshift and pull FIRST. But i was told even if i was really rich it wont affect power that much.... (anyone have anything else to say on that topic? it seems even on the steepest of hills in sand i would at least be able to SPIN the paddles even if i lost momentum?) i dont really know as i have never experienced sand at that steep of a hill.

so im thinking i need a new carb to give me the extra power i want.
The only thing is, most of our riding is trails and places like the badlands/silver lake michigan (for those of you who are familiar with those places)
where i dont really NEED that much power... (geared 15/40 with 20 rears it spools up pretty quick on dirt) (riding large areas its always nice to be able to pull a gear higher than normal, or just to have the extra power for dragging)

the two carbs im looking at are the 44mm, and the 46hv from mr. hp.
the 44mm im told only has a one or two HP loss compared to the HV (and i guess its on the VERY top)

44mm with new throttle and everything needed = about 525 ish
46hv with new throttle and everything needed = about 725ish

i know a lot of people have run the 46, and like it a lot. Anyone have experience with the 44?
i think a carb would be the next best improvement, as i already have ported intake (mr hp) clutch springs/cdi/pipe/filter.

let me know what you guys think.

jetting can play a big part in climbing hills, it was probably worse with the elevation. i've been to lean and could get out of my own way on a hill that my kid climbed on her 300 honda.

maybe i need to dyno this thing and make sure jetting is PERFECT, then the next time i go to silver lake or a similar large place i can drag, and see how i do.

with an open HMF pipe i was running a 170 dyno jet main (somthing like a 152.5 mikuni) i have full mikunis and dynos and run the dynos as "half" sizes.
i ran a stock 40 pilot
dont remember where clip was....i think 4th position down from the top.

isn't 165 stock main jet size sounds like you were very lean if you were at 152.5 for stock jetting. i'd try a 170 to 180 don't know what the dyno jet equal is.

i thought u were asking what was i jetted at utah.... at utah i was 152.5....here i run a 175 mikuni. im pretty sure i was still really rich as i guess most DS's run a 145/150 main at little sahara (its like 4k or so ft above.)

Roost you were probably lean at LS - I only drop 3 main jet sizes from sea level to 5K at Little Sahara. I have a TM45 carb, run 157 at home, 150 at LIttle Sahara. Going from 175 to 152 is a major change, especially on the stock carb, no way a change that big would be necesary. being that lean was probably causing you serious power. Justa couple sizes off can mean a big difference on a hill climb like Sand Mt.

that would explain the loss of power... and the heat. I dont remember who it was i was talking to that said they run a 145 there...so i figured a 152.5/155 would be rich enough to be safe.

just seems like the symptoms were rich. Now i dont feel so bad that my friends piped yfz's SMOKED me up EVERYTHING (although they ARE a bit faster, and they both weigh like 150 each lol)
