Traxter 500 XL Questions
#1
Fella's, I have a friend w/ a '01 Traxter 500 XL w/ a warn winch. He wants to sell it to me for $4400. It has 90 miles on it and has been garage kept. Hardly any scratches and new Blackwater tires.
1. Is this a decent deal?
2. What problems have the '01's encountered?
3. How is the electronic shifter?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

1. Is this a decent deal? I think it is a great deal.
2. What problems have the '01's encountered? None that I know of, but I have a 03. I don't know if the 01's have the electric shift like the later ones do?
3. How is the electronic shifter? REALLY REALLY nice.
Side note: These things ride really harsh but the trade-off is they can really pack a load or tow a ton. If you want you can put a kit on it to ride nicer. Check out the trip odometer. These things won't register a mile if you cycle the key under a mile. My quad has almost 500 miles on the trip odometer but only 150 on the odometer. If this guy lives on a ranch he could have 5000 actual miles on it with only 90 showing. Don't ask me why Bomb did this? To make sure, check out the hours one the speedo.
Depending on what you want to do with it I would buy it, sounds like a good deal!!!

The trip OD on my 03 is on the speedo. There is a button in the center of it, give it a push. It will give you odometer, trip odometer and hours with every push of the button.
I think you will like the quad for what you are planning to do. These quads are very well built. You will really like the Visco lock. That thing works great!!!
BTW, I have a standard 03 and I got mine for just under 7k. This will give you an idea what kind of deal you are getting on this thing. I could be wrong but I don't think much changed between the 01's and the 03's.

my uncles has a traxter, i think its an 02, he hasn't had any problems with it that i know of, i've used it quite a bit, it does ride a lil rough but its a great utility machine, as i see u'll use it mostly for hunting i think it'll b a great machine, the step throught is very nice wen the back is all loaded up,
doctorturbo - can u explain more about it not registering a mile if cycling the key under a mile, i'm not quite gettin wat your saying

lilnotts I know your going to think I'm nuts but this is the honest truth, straight from Bomb.
If you ride your quad lets say 3/4 of a mile and then stop and turn the key off that 3/4 of a mile won't register on the odometer. It will on the trip odometer. This will cause a strange situation by putting more miles on the trip odometer than the regular odometer.
I own a ranch and I may drive like 1/4 of a mile before I turn the quad off. I do this time after time and day after day. After awhile I have 500 miles on the trip odometer and maybe 150 on the regular odometer. If I reset the trip odometer I won't really know how many "real" miles I have on my quad (nor will the next owner). This is why I do my service by hours instead of miles.
BTW lilnotts brings up a good point about the step through.

Bit the bullet!!!!
Proud owner of a '01 Traxter 500.
Doc, You're right about the harsh ride. What kind of suspension upgrade were you referring to?
It seems the trip was reset but only 100 miles showing on the odometer. I really love the power and weight of the atv. I already put it through my rigeress test of mud and hill climbing. No problems in any type of terrain.
Already looking @ the DS!!!!!!

Preflex makes a kit that will relocate the shocks. I don't have one, but I have heard nothing but good things about them.
Glad you like your new quad!!!!!! How many hours were showing on it?
