I had one if the first DS650's way back in late 1999, and its been really fun! But, after riding the YFZ, I'm totally hooked on it. I now have to sell the DS because I dont have room in my garage for three quads. Those that know me, know where they can find out the details.

My experience has shown that any first year quad has problems. As far as your 2004 ds650 baja X, all of us that purchased the early models helped work out all the bugs for those that came out later, including the X.

The short list of DS650 Bugs

* Fan
* Chain Roller
* Front AArms
* Suspension/Shocks
* Rectifier
* Shift Forks
* Swing arm
* Battery
* Tires
* Tachometer

Those are just a few of the improvement over the years. Many of the problems were published right here on ATV connections. Those that read the posts, who included manufacturers, did a lot of work to improve on it. I look forward to being a part of the YFZ experience.

Since I bought a YFZ for my son when he out grew the capabilities of his 400EX when he was 13 years old, we have a YFZ and a DS in our garage (and three Grizzlys ), . So I have spent lots of time switching back and forth between the YFZ and the DS. The YFZ is faster in a drag race, handles better, corners better, and my now 14 year old son can beat me badly, just about everywhere with it. In fact, the only place I can still run away from him is on wide open scary fast desert race courses, likely because he hasn't grown big enough huevos yet.

You know what though? I still like the DS better, and I mean LOTS better. If I were buying a new sport quad right now the DS would still be my top choice, and the YFZ would be near the bottom of the list.

But you know what, everyone should be able to buy the ATV that they want, so congratulations are in order for your YFZ. Have fun with it, I know my son sure likes his. As long as you like the YFZ, who cares what we think.

I think you ought to try out one of the new 2005s, if your considering anything new, come on, you owe it to yourself. To compare a 2000 DS to a 2005 YFZ can be a little steep, at least compare the 2005 DS to the 2005 YFZ - if you do, you'll probably end up on the DS.

Marky, I think you'd actually be a good fit on a YFZ and I know you've wanted one since they came out.
I only have to say that whoever ends up with your DS better budget for polishing compound, that bikes got billet all over the place.

I admit that I havent tried the new 2005 DS. But, the reason I am looking for a new one is for dune dragging. I love the ride on my DS, and love the comfort of the seat. With as much as I have into the suspension on my DS, I doubt that the 2005 even comes close the the comfort of my 2000 DS.

On the other hand, the YFZ has a narrow little banana seat that should come with a bottle of Preparation H with every sale. But the YFZ is the first 4-stroke motor I have seen thats so high strung. Which is exactly what you need for dune drags. Yes, I could get a Banshee, but Banshees are on thier way out - and Im not so sure that would be a good business decision.

I've riden almost every model of DS out there, including the Baja. The ride is 2nd to none! I'm just not so sure how important that is in a dune drag.
