Well as I said in my previous post I had my DS dyno tested this morning, the dyno is a chassis dyno so the HP was measured at the back wheels.

After a tyre warm up to reduce slip I took the bike through the gears up to the rev limit on 5th gear the result was 42HP this represents something like 63 hp at the engine ( basiclly you loose a third through the transmission ).

The above results were run on a 00 DS with no other mods other than the pipe. The results are in line with the way the machine now performs.

THe result is 9hp overall at the rear wheels over stock or 13hp at the the engine over stock. The cost of this pipe is approx $500.00 Australian dollars or $ 300.00 US.

regards

SO YOU ARE TRYING TO SAY THAT THE DS ONLY PUTS OUT 33HP IN THE REAR WHEELS.

Chris

unfortuneatly I didn't have the stock pipe with me when I put the quad on the dyno, however the guy at the Automotive Tuning Centre told me that you usually loose approx 30% through the drive train, I also confirmed this with another dyno operator.

If the above is true and the SAE horsepower of the DS is 50hp on the engine then one can suggest that approx 17hp is lost through the transmission. If you or any one else can enlighten me on this let me know.

In the July 4 Wheel ATV Action mag there is an article from Ron Woods racing that depicts the Stock DS having only 42hp at 6500 rpm at the crank so i wonder where they get their information from.

It must be remembered that the dyno results that i got were done on a conventioal brake dyno, not an Inertia dyno.

Again as i said in an earlier post the difference in performance is like chalk and cheese, The results from the pipe is a huge leap forward.

regards

Nice looking pipe. Is it all stainless? How about carb jetting...did you change that?

I have a special order in for 25x12x10 12-paddle Skat-Trak taller haulers. I have 20x10x10 9-paddle haulers and they don't hook up very good for a 170lb rider and can dig/sink with stock motor, stock gearing. The tires I have on order are intended for sand drags with the Alba supercharger kit installed. 4-wheel ATV is doing a review on the 12" ITP magnum wheels for the DS650 in the next issue I believe. The reason I didn't buy the 12" rims is because Skat-Trak doesn't have 11" or 12" wide rear sand tires for them. I need the most floatation I can get.

I am beginning to think the 12 paddles are too many for a stock DS. I can not get into 3rd gear climbing the dunes without it bogging down and needing to shift back down to 2nd. It still hauls a$$ in second for sure but I can't get the speed up. I weigh over 200 pounds so I am getting lots of traction, too much I think, the front end tends to start getting light as I get to the top of the dune. I would like to try a few less paddles and see how that does. I don't think I am getting enough tire spin. I know one thing for sure....you really got to pay attention to where you stop and/or how you take off with these tires, they will dig big holes real fast. I wasn't used to running paddles when I first got the quad and found out the hard way several times.

A pipe should help with the bogging.
