Ok so I hear alot of you guys dropped from 16 to 15 tooth on the counter sprocket, and some off you guys dropped to even 14 tooth, has that really made you short shift to stay in the power band???

I switched to 14-43 at the time of my first 'break-in' oil change and the boys in the local dealer's shop kinda snickered. I had 2 reasons for gearing this low. First, I'd seen that local drag racing like at the county fairs was usually LESS than 100 yards but NEVER more than that distance. My second gear launches are about on par with any of the high $ tricked out other brand quads in this area. My second big reason for gearing so low was woods riding on tight, technical trails - I NEVER need to slip the clutch in tight places. I'm still using stock rear tires & rims for drags, but use a pair of 24x11x10 Duro mud tires(& wish I'd got them in 25x12) on Douglas .190s for mud racing & trail riding. This gearing/tire combo on my otherwise pure stock X has won 2wd class mud bog twice this summer and out in the woods I've yet to see anybody top a hill that I can't also make

Sorry guys, I don't own a decent camera. I've been taking a few pics with those single use cameras, but they haven't been any good detail shots. Don't even have a scanner on my computer to be able to post pics in here. One little trick I was told by a much younger rider that seems to help in mud bogs - I mount the Douglas rear wheels inside out so I'm running a NARROWER rear track than most everyone else, and with the Duro's tread REVERSED btw: Got my new endcap from Mr. HP late today, just had time to get it on & take short test ride before dark. It looks good It sounds good It feels REAL good Tomorrow I'll get the NoToil air filter on, then Friday try to get the carb dialed in. Can anybody tell me what size main jet came in the '04 X ?

Stock Main jet in 04 X is a 165, and stock needle position is the 4th place.

Jay, I went out to the garage this morning and checked. I still have more than 2" with the 24s so you should be fine with a 25" tall tire which should only have half an inch less clearance. Just a little added rear axle height helps me a lot sometimes. Barry, thank you for the starting point info on the carb! Did you need to change needle position along with jet change to accomodate your filter/intake/pipe setup? Was it hard to get dialed in? I'm hoping to be able to feel some improvement when I go to the drags Saturday evening

CraneMan,
I have tried 165, 170, 172.5 & 175 main jets and the best set up is the 175 main with the needle in the 4th (stock) position. I never touched the air screw or Pilot jet. If I go smaller than 175 with my set up I get some lean popping or backfiring, and the plugs burn white. With my EHS air box cover I am still a little lean at 175. But I have not tried the 180 main jet with it yet.

I suppose if I take out the quite core and run with the EHS air box cover I will need to jet richer to 180.

But for now trail riding around home with quite core in and stock air box cover, she performs great with the 175 main jet.
Golden brown electrodes on the plugs with just a hint of white on the tips. It also helps that there are really no fast moded ATV’s to push me to maker her faster and louder around here.

I put some stickers on the DS and now everyone is scared to race me, on there 400's and such, I guess they think I can ride well since my ATV has after market stickers on her. I still miss shifts and pop wheelies all the time But I am getting better with practice.

But I must admit, if I drive her like I know what I’m doing she sure is quick!
Sometimes don’t you wish you could see the face of the guy behind you, as you show them just what the DS can do.

You should have seen my face during the race! But I just wear old work boots so my shifting I guess is so-so. The shoes were the difference maker.
quick shift riding boots.
