What is the info on the bike? how old, what type of riding (how hard is it run), and when were the valves/piston last inspected? And what were the symptoms leading up to this happening? Any blue smoke or anything or just bam! all of a sudden no compression?

If I had to guess i'd say rings would be most common.

I would find it hard to believe that an 2004 motor would be needing rings already. Did you do a compression test? When you did the compression test did you disable the compression release on the exhaust cam, and keep the throttle wide open? What #s did you get?

It sounds like your valves clearance are way out spec. Easy job, just have to reshim the valves to get them back in spec. The not starting unless being pull started sounds like your one or all of your valves are too tight and letting off compression when they are not supposed to.

what he said. LOL. Well if you can pullstart it and make it run, you'd definately notice smoke if the rings were gone...

And about the disbelief of needing rings already, My friends 03, not much older than most 04's, blew some rings already. They didn't wear out though, it showed no signs of anything wrong... We went riding one day, no oil temp light, no fan, nothing out of the normal happened, but when we went to start it later that night it wouldn't start. The exhaust was blowing and sucking hard, pulled a plug and there was no compression against my finger. We went ahead and pulled the head off, and the rings had siezed and shattered, getting into a fight with the cylinder walls and the head. Oil was fresh and to spec, we have no idea why it happened.
Anyways thats my story of the day.

Before you do anything do a leak-down. If you really have 0 compression you are either going to have a hole in the piston or a valve issue. Could be as simple as a clearence issue like Sandaholic said.

As far as rings being shatered..that could be a result of detonation. That comes from poor fuel, too much ignition timing, too lean or D: all the above. ...on the '04 I think I would be looking at valve lash and or blown head gasket...do the leakdown and find out.

ON the shattered rings, everything was being run the same, usual riding, usual fuel, no tinkering.... Unless he did something dumb and doesn't wanna tell us, there are no causes that we can think of that would have happened....Stumped.

the only thing i did was put a fmf power core 4 slip on and i ditn do anything stupied if i did i would say to find out the problem alot quicker it was acting up for awhile you can push it over in first gear and my friend has the same one same year and his rings went out about 3-4 months after he had it luckly he had warranty mine doesnt. if you put your hand over the exhaust there is very little to no compression ther when you turn it over
