This would be my first guess as to what caused your diaphragm to tear. As you can tell it is a real delicate part and would not be hard at all to tear if you are not real careful. I have never heard of anyone tearing the diaphragm from ridding, no matter how hard they ride, although I guess it is possible.

I also never really hear about people replacing the stock carb because it could not take the abuse, most people replace the carb for performance reasons, not durability reasons.

Good luck getting it back together, I hate when you are waiting for parts so you can go ride/race

Default HELP! Carb trouble

Okay, now the parts came in today.
I installed a new diaphram. It does the same thing. It will run at an idle but that's about it. You can get going for a few seconds if you hold the throttle down but it sputters and dark smoke comes out. Then, when you let off the throttle it dies.
Any ideas?

I would checkout ebay. There are a couple of carbs on there right now. Might be an easier way out of your problem.

Have you changed your main jet lately?
I hope you did not change the starter jet instead of the main jet.
The main jet has the brass fuel tube over the main jet.

Default HELP! Carb trouble

I got neddle #sd707200137. It was $20.32 and it is attached inside the diapham thing. I bought what the dealer mechanic said to buy. After talking to him tonight, he said to bring it in in the morning and on his lunch break he will work on it.
I hate not knowing what the hell I'm doing. I am good with a book and can learn. There is little info in the shop manual. I mean there is a lot they don't talk about or describe in the book. It is frustrating. I wish there was more.
I saw the carb on ebay and it was for a polaris and the seller said it was the same as the DS. I didn't kow for sure and missed out as it ended.

Default HELP! Carb trouble

I finally got the main and new float bowl. I replaced them both. I tried it out and it again started right up and idled. Then I gave it throttle. It started out fine but then died. Whatever I did helped it a little bit. I am able to give more throttle than before. I am wondering about something oldmanracing said about the float bowl. I installed the new float and did not bent the little metal tab at all. I noticed on my original it was bent and not evenly either. I started to think this was the problem the whole time. Looking over the manual it say to bend the tab using a measuring guage. I did not bend anything.
Still dead.

Default HELP! Carb trouble

I am beside myself.
My dad and I attacked the carb today. He is "The Master"
We tried many things.
We found that the diaphram/slide is not going up when throttle is applied. By manually moving the slide up, it will rev fine. We took the stock, untouched spring out and ran it. Without the spring it ran pretty good, but still had a little trouble lifting the slide. It did lift it though. At higher r's it had no trouble keeping it up.
We oiled the slide and put the spring and everything back together. Same problem as in the beginning.
Any idea's as to why the diaphram/slide is not coming up?
Clipping the spring is not the trick either. The thing worked fine before and should work fine without cutting anything.
