Default Tach going bad after 15 hours

Hey guys have you ever heard or had the problem of your tach getting stuck at 5000 RPMs and staying there? I was riding today and I looked down and the tach as no moving and was stuck at 5000 RPM. The engine was fine, working normally just the tach read was broken. I stopped the bike turned it off and the tach as still stuck. I then tapped on the tach and the needle fell to about 3000 RPM mark and just stayed there. I decided to head back to the truck and about three minutes later is just started working again. It has not broken since. Your guys have any ideas.

Firebug,

Have you done any modifications up there in the dash? Over the years they have changed the mounting for the dash so that is is loose, in order to isolate vibration. If that was tied down, it would kill the tach.

Firebugg,
My tach did exactly what your describing at about 15--20 hrs on my 04. The bike was running just fine but the tach just started wiggin out for some reason. I have not done any modifications up around the dash area. I haven't noticed it happening in the last few months so I kind of forgot about it. Give it some time to see if it goes away. Maybe our bikes are possessed or something

I have a 2002 Baja and after about 70 hours of riding the needle came off the post. My bike was no longer under warranty so I called Autometer and they had me send it back to get fixed for free. Then about 20 hours later the needle broke in half. I emailed my contact at autometer and guess what? He never responded. Oh well , I can still read the tach and being exspensive to replace , I'll wait till it breaks completely.

I used to get random crazy jumps of the needle and the needle freezing, I found out I had an intermitent
ground, cleaned the ground and haven't had a problem in about 2 years

Well I took my Bomb in for its break in service. God Berts mega mall totally rapped me. $320 for parts and labor. So what if I have peace of mind. Ya my bike is perfect and everything is good to got and checked by a certified technician, but god damn $320 is freakin crazy. The labor rate is more expensive them the mechanics at the honda dealer where I get my car worked on.

Any then checked my tach. They ordered my a new one. I am going to have to drive back down to Covina (60 miles one way) to get it installed. It totally sucks ***. Since I am going down I am going to have them install so ITP holeshots HD 6 ply tires on the rear and front. Make the trip worth the drive. I heard the tires are great for desert trail riding.
