Slide flutter.....
#1
I've been trying to track down a problem with my bike, and I'd like to cross one possibility off of the list of many. Would anyone be able to give me some of the symptoms of "Slide Flutter"? I cut 5 coils off of my carb spring, and now wonder if I may have cut too much. I'm thinking that the spring may have been cut by the previous owner, and I didn't realize it.
Thanks for any help!!!

Do you have the stock needle jet?
If yes, is it in the 4th groove from the top down?
If yes, is the spring shorter than 2 7/8 inches?
If yes, replace with the new 05 spring and do not cut.
Flutter is a condition that when you hit the throttle at low rpm (2000-2500),
the slide overly rises and falls till rpm's increase. It dumps excess fuel that boogs the motor.
Jetting is a nightmare. You can't tell if you need to lower the needle or go to a smaller main jet.
If your float is alittle high, with flutter, it seems like you can never clean up your bottom end.
I prefer to run my float on the lower side. Edges of the float parallel to the carb base.

That's similar to what I've been experiencing. It's strange, sometime's the bike will run great, then crap out so badley it will hardley keep running. The only way to describe it, is it "diesels" really badley. All my electrical components checked out, and when I took the carb apart, and cleaned it, it was spotless. The bike always ran great, the problem is I can't remember if this all started after I cut the spring. I do recall that when I cut the spring, I also got rid of the stock vent tubing. It was all cracked and nasty, so I replaced it. I went with a shorter tube, and cut a hole next to the cap, and ran the tube out of that hole. I think the tube I'm using now is just alittle smaller in diameter than the stock vent tube was. Do you think the diameter of the vent tube could be an issue? I wondered about this after I posted the thread. In looking at past posting's, I read about the '05 carb spring. I just got back from ordering a new spring, and stock vent tube.
Thanks for the reply!!!

Edit: Sorry I forgot to answer your questions. I have the dynojet needle, clip on the 4th position, running 185 jet. Something else I forgot to mention, is that I just noticed after my last time out, that the carb pissed all over my swingarm. It was covered in fuel, etc.
Thanks for the reply!!!

Cut a hole next to cap? I need more info
Are you running at least a slipon silencer?
4th from the top or bottom of needle? Should be 2nd or 3rd (open airbox) from top
Main jet sounds OK
When fuel comes out carb, sometimes dirt gets stuck under float plunger and leaks.
Stop motor and open screw on bottom/side of carb and flush fuel to get dirt out.
Sometimes fuel comes out because float is too high!!!!!

I'm sorry, let me clarify. I cut a hole in the shroud, next to the gas cap, and ran the tube out from under the shroud, thru the hole. I can blow into the tube, and can tell it's not pinched.
Yes, I have an E-series with an open end cap, similar to an HMF. I believe the needle is at 3rd from top.
When I took the carb apart, everything was clean, and moved freely. I had not previously made any changes to the float, etc.
Until this problem came about, the bike had ran great.

Are we talking about the two small breather tubes to the carb or the large balance tube that connects to the side/ top of carb and then to to the beginning of snorkle tube , by airbox.
What is the length of your spring?

The tube I'm referring to is the gas tank vent tube. It come's off the front, left side of the gas tank, under the shroud, and from the factory, circles the tank several times.
As far as the length of my spring is concerned, I haven't been able to check yet...I have an 11 month old daughter who's refusing to nap...lol. I'll let you know asap!!!

Alright...got it checked...the spring is just a hair less than 2 1/2 inches in length. I also checked the needle position while I was at it. It's on the 4th position down, from the top.

Ok, I got curious as to what the dynojet needle instructions are. I dug the info up, and it read's that the needle should be in the 2nd position from the top. I'm two positions richer than what they suggest. I think I'll drop the needle, and see what happens with that. I don't think that the needle position is the problem that I'm experiencing though.

2 1/2 inches is too short. Since you have a new spring on order, I would stretch the spring to between 3 and 3 1/8 inches in length. Because springs have some memory, it will shink alittle. You want to stay above 2 7/8 when settled.
I crushed the gas tank vent tube once and it took me 2 days to figure it out and then 1/2 hour to find where it was crushed.
