Default timing question now

Hello all thanks for all the answers to my past questions this week. I am now checking my timing on my ds. There are two marks on the crank that I see. When I turn it over slow by hand these two marks are side by side. Now do I go by the first one or second or right in the middle? I was going by right between the two marks, and the marks on the cam sprockets were off just a little bit so I thought it was off a tooth. Now after taking the cam tensioner out and moving the sprockets I still cant get them lined up. It is even farther off then it was to begin with. I guess my main question is do they have to point exactly right on the arrows that are on the plastic piece between the two? I am doing this for the first time and really dont want to bend any thing.

are you working on a ds 650? if so your cam lobes need to be facing away from each other, the exhuast forward and the intake to the rear then they should line up

Default timing question now

I am wondering about the timing marks in the bolt hold on the bottom of the motor. When I turn it over slowly by hand there are two marks Im wondering what mark I should line up the first on or the second one (turning the motor by hand and clockwise) thanks

In between those two marks there is a notch. That is where I have always set mine with a crank lock down tool. Like you, I have never gotten the two marks lined up perfect but pretty darn close. If the marks are really off then take a look at the dowel pins on the cams that hold the gears in place, I have heard of those shearing.
