Default Inputs needed - Intakes/CDI

Guys, looking for some thoughts based on your experience. If I decided to go another step from my current setup is a ported intake or CDI one of the next prudent/cost-effective steps?

I'm pretty happy wiith the way it is now (compared to out of the box) so I don't want to throw $$ out just to say I have "XXX" as well as a filter, jetted blah blah blah. I also don't want to sacrifice reliability. I'm a hard core dune rider that could care less about hill shooting. Just looking to enhance the thing a bit more while retaining duneability.

Thanks in advance,

Rich

Rich,
I would say a carb would be next in line. and the TM45 cost for cost is a good buy. IMO

I agree Rich. Ive tried 3 diff cdi's. They seemed to work great at first. I have had bad luck with the cdi's advancing the timing to much. I put my stock cdi back on this past weekend at Dumont. I didn't hit the limiter once and the curves seemed the same.

Good feedback guys, this is exactly the kind of comments I was hoping for.

When you go with these carbs does it require you to ditch the stock airbox and/or move to another type of air filter?

when I had the stock air box on usually I left the box on w/ lid off. but when I drag race and I know its going to be dry out Ill run w/ out the air box it seems to breath better w/ box off. Ive been using a uni now for a while w/ no complaints. but some like the KN and some no toil. from what Ive heard in the past the stock filter actually flows really well but one can not clean it so it needs to be tossed.
good luck!

Rich807, what tires are you running? What size are they? At your stage proper tires and gearing are more important than a cdi or intake. Also, carbs really don't fall into your catagory of being cost effective, in my opinion.
W1ingnut, what were the symptoms of having to much timing? I've bumped mine up and have never had it ping while my friend swore his stock bike pinged. It turned out his timing chain adjuster was going and the rattle he would hear intermitantly was the chain slap.

I'm running 22" haulers with a 15T front countershaft. I really like everything I've done so far. For not spending too many bills I feel like I've got a big return for a small investment. What I really like is having a bike run good with an enclosed airbox. In 25 years of riding I've never had anthing that was like that. It's so nice not to have to clean the air filter after every trip to the dunes, I'm not sure I want to lose that.

Go with a 42 or 43 tooth alum rear sprocket unless you really need top speed. Home porting your own cdi (do a search on old posts) and tweaking your carburetor would also be the next moves. After this the added performance starts costing $$$. There are also better paddle tires but they would cost a couple hundred extra after you sold yours.

I'd be afraid of screwing up my intake if I ported it myself. I've messed around with porting a little back in my 2 stroke days and ended up deciding to leave it to the pros. I was just too easy to take off more material than you set out to
