" Funny" Fuels... whats the trick?

Ive seen more than once people mentioning the use of Nitro to make a custom blend of fuel. Whats the story behind this ?
Where do you start ? Is it only useable in certian compressions, or modifications? Is there a sizeable gain when using or is it just to get that extra 1/10th off your time? Is it only practical for the drags or can it be used in closed course racing?? How is this used in conjunction with ignition timeing?
Soooo many questions .....

If you're talking about the store bought octane additive then it is used to help up the octane level with the higher compression motors when only 91 pump fuel is available. I'm sure there are those here who are better equipped to answer in more detail.

Nitromethane is not practical for anything but drag racing. When running Nitro, fuel requirement for the engine goes skyhigh. I was burning about one gallon per pass in practice, that includes a 3 minute warm up and trip back down the return lane.
Be prepared to waste a few engines before you figure out the black science of tuning nitromethane. But I must say it's VERY addictive.
