CDI worth the money ?

I was thinking of buying a Ron Woods CDI or a MSD because I have read about problems with the others I just want to know is it really worth the money ? and if it makes your bike faster or quicker how many bike lenth's if any do you think i would pick up in a 100 yard drag race ?

I think most everyone that does some sort of engine modification has some kind of an aftermarket CDI. There have been some problems with the Procom ones. In terms of technology, the MSD is probably the most flexible. The Vortex is probably next and its slightly more simple than the MSD, but you dont get some of the features either. The Ron Wood Box has to be rewired for the newer DS 650s. Big Gun, Alba and a few others are re-branded boxes by Procom but they do have slightly different curves. I think a lot of the guys in here do like the less expensive boxes. And from what I hear, those that malfunction are being replaced by the manufacturer. If you do get a less expensive box, I suggest you keep your stock one handy for a replacement if needed.

I second that statement. If i wouldnt of had my stocker a 3 hr drive would of been wasted.
I did like not hitting the limiter though.

I purchased a RWR CDI from a member. I found it in the, "What's in your garage" thread. I picked it up for $125. As far as performance is concerned..it really doesn't run all that much different when I'm trail riding, but when I'm in the dunes, I notice I can pull the hills without bumping the rev limiter like I did with the stock CDI.

Your not going to gain very much power, probably won't even notice it but you won't have the annoyance of hitting the rev limiter when drag racing or riding hard. Most people that have the high rev limiters also have engine mods where it keeps making power(HP) in the high rpm's unlike stock engines where its pointless to rev the engine to the rev limiter because its on the downside of its power curve. In a 100 yd drag race you might gain a bike length, maybe.

Ive had a few of the aftermarket boxes and I like the Wood the best. I dune ride and drag race alot. It help alot in you are spinning as you stock box will hit the limiter. I will tell you if you are an over rev guy you need to install a set of heavy or double valve springs. Ive removed several stock pistons where the bike had been over reved and the piston had little smiley faces on it from the valves hitting the piston. You can float the valve with the stock springs.
