Default Sputtering in mid range

Ive got a huge sputter in the mid range. Then the power comes on huge.Would that indicate a
lean needle or a rich needle?

Ive got a 175 main, needle in the 4th i believe, stock pilot.With a hmf,k-n,lid on.

Hows the bottom end, snappy off idle, and pulls hard to the sputter? A little more throttle and she clears up? If so then I say rich

I had a similar sounding problem from not cleaning my K&N filter enough. Had to clean my carb all the time and finally replace it.

Take the air box lid off and see if it clears up.

Check the tank vent first - it is the most common and easiest. next clean the filter, make sure your spark plugs are in good shape and gapped. if that doesn't work try cleaning the carburetor. I have a feeling this is going to be one of those 'minor' things that you just forgot to do or similar. Also when did you last adjust your valves, ever? how many hours on the machine? Do you know what to do to clean the carb etc? If not then post here and we'll help you out some more.

Pulls hard to sputter. Its mainly 3rd gear and up i usually dont notice it in first and second.
When im easy on the throttle i can get past it.Its when im cruising along and try to hammer down
it will sputter and then its back to full power.

Just did the vent line check when my cdi went bad.And cleaned out all the jets.
The filter was clean when i started the ride sunday. After the dusty trails i know it needs
to be cleaned.

You know i didnt even think to remove the lid to see if it was rich.Ill try that after i clean it.

The valves were done at about 20 hrs. They should probably be checked.

Thanks for the help.
