Default engine rebuild?

i left my DS at a friends house and lets just say she has never been the same. I'm no mechanic so i didnt know what was wrong, i have been working off quite a bit so i havent had hardly any time to mess with it in the past few months. but i finally got it to the shop where i purchased it, and just called to check on it. He says i need t complete overhaul, which is a complete rebuild right? anyhow, complete rebuild for around $600. i dont have a problem with that, but if im gonna spend 600 to get it running, how much more would it cost to get an upgrade from MR HP or something like that? or what are really my options for around $1,000? Thats really all the change i can really throw at it right now, but if its worth it, i'll keep it broke down and save up if its worth it. What do you guys think?

Well, whenever they say you need a rebuilt, overhaul or whatever....it would be nice if you could tell us actually what the bike will do or will not do for that matter...maybe we can point you in the right direction.

sorry about that, the bike WILL start up, but not near as easy as it used to. It smokes pretty bad (guessing thats prolly from the rings, but once again, im no mechanic), always oil in the air box, um....when it does run, it back fires a lot, if you try to give it a lot of gas it just sputters and dies, if in neutral and no throttle is being applied, it will die after just a few seconds. thats all i can pretty much think of right now.

Have you done a compression test. Oil in the air box doesnt sound good. is the smoke blue or black? You might check your valve clearances also. Sounds like alot of different problems. Rings, valve train, carb. Do a compression check and see what it is. Scoundrel had a parts list somewhere around here for a build that was around $1500.00 I will see if I can find it.

Here a list posted by scoundrel. You already have some of this stuff so it will lower you cost. Im not sure what you will have to do to the cylinder.

HPR 12:1 Piston Kit
Head Gasket
Base gasket
HPR Port matched Intake
HR3 Cams
HPR Shim under valve spring kit
#9 series spark plugs
TM45 Carb
15T Front Sprocket
K&N Filter W/outerwear

= about $1,500

It keeps on Going and going and going and going and going and going and going and going and going......

I would add the open end cap on there too. About 125.00

hm...im undecided still...if i knew what exactly was wrong with my quad i would just upgrade whatever i needed to, i kinda need to keep as much change in my pocket as i can with me being a poor college kid. when i asked what was wrong with my quad all he would say was my motor is just wore out, and it needs a complete overhaul. i guess i could ask him exactly what all parts will be upgraded and purchase them on here to save some money. is 600 a good price for a complete overhaul?

Man, I think all you need to do is have them pull the cylinder to take a look at the condition. Hone it if necessary and maybe bore it if necessary, clean your carb and see where your at.

Depends on what he going to do. If its just rings and gaskets it sounds high to me. If he has to get into the head its probably fair. I do all my own engine work so I dont really have anything to compare it to. The rotax is actually fairly simple to work on. Maybe you should consider doing it yourself. You will save alot of coin. All the answers to the hard parts can be found here.
