Im about at the end of my rope with this 48mm piece of ****. Here's the story, I got my head back from KMS on Sat. Got her all put together no problems. The bike was already running rich here at home so I didnt screw with the carb at all. I put it on and started it up no problem. Took it out and rode it (not hard) for about 45min. Got back to the shop and just for kick's I pulled a plug and it was like it hadnt even been run(no color on the plug). So I gave the needle a full turn and ran it again. once again no color but performance improved. Today I loaded it up to take it to Christmas Valley to get some sand under it. ABout the time I was leaving Kelly (KMS) called to see how things were going and said that I will probabley need yet another full turn to get it rich enough. So I gave it yet another full turn. I also changed the power jets from 10's to a 25 and 45 to richen up the top end. First off it started but wouldnt idle. I had the idle speed screw all the way in and it would die. Turning the idle mixture screw does nothing ( I think its just there for decoration). So I turned the needle back a half turn at a time unitl I got it to idle. Took it for a spin and it ran Ok not great, it should pull alot harder. Did a plug chop and checked it. Plug still way to clean no color. Ok so I put the biggest power jets in that HPR gave me 85 and 90 now it snaps and pops about 6500 rpm and runs like crap. Plugs still white. Im at a total loss. this thing has been a pain in the a$$ from day one. Were a week away from DS days and I cant get it to run. What should I do next, theres no time to can it and get another carb. the stock one isnt big enough for the 730 and ported head. Maybe I need a different needle. I dont know, Im really a patient guy for the most part but if that thing didnt weigh 470 i would have picked it up and threw it over a cliff today. I guess this carb is great if you have a local dyno and a rocket scientist locally to tune it but I dont. I dont know where to go from here, man I hate this carb!

we are almost identical on these builds other than im running the hr4 and you have the 109. the only change i made on the carb was i took the 100 power jet out and installed the45. but i have only a single power jet mine has that rough idle but that is just the cams. i haven't turned the needle or messed with any of that stuff. turned the idle screw and the air bleed a little but never the needle. give eric or randal a call.

First make sure that you don't have a fuel delivery problem like a pinched fuel line or plugged filter. I would guess the Lectron has a drain so open it up and turn on the gas to see if you have good flow. I had a similar problem with white plugs. I drilled the fuel petcock out alittle, got a vented cap and got rid of the little screens that are mounted on the petcock and sit inside the tank, now I run a filter.
Christmas Valley is around 4,500' and warm now, you shouldn't be having problems like this with the needle they provided.

hey scatterbrain, i was having a similer problem, i took mine to the dyno and we had trouble on the dyno getting her spot on. we finally just made her real rich and just started tuning down from there. i would leave that 90 pj in there andsart working the needle down untill it gets crisp....mine right now is running perfect..REAL SNAPPY...but i agree with u on that idle mixture screw, i couldnt get a responce out of it on or off of the dyno...we would turn that thing in and out and didnt see ANY change on the dynos air to fuel mixture...good luck, i hope u get going before ds days, once u do i think u are going to love this carb.

Scatter, Im very sorry that you have had nothing but a headache with this carb...I can tell you that I recieved mine from HPR and bolted it right on and have never had one issue with it. Good Luck.

Ok, I think I got the idle problem solved. Evidentley the plugs are really hard to read on a DS. I was to rich which to get it to idle I had to have the idle speed all the way in to get it to idle. Im going to lean it out a little more to get some adjustment. Im still at a loss about the air fuel mix screw. 2Big, how many turns out is yours? I talked to Kelly this morning he said that the snapping at 6500rpm was probabley due to a rich misfire, too big on the power jets. So im going to keep stepping down on the jets until the snap goes away. I guess my real worry here is making sure that Im not to lean. I have a ton a money in this thing and I want it to last and not blow up when I put the Nitrous to it. Does it sound like Im on the right track?
2Big, What compression are you running and how big of a shot are you planning on?
Thanks guys for the reponse, sorry if I sounded like I was ranting. I was just really frustrated with it yesterday. First round's on me at DS days. Im goin it alone this trip, the girlfriend just had surgery so she cant go. Wouldnt mind sharing my fire and tellin lies with you guys. I'll be driving a white and silver chevy with an aljo trailer. My bike is red with black and chrome flames. Im going to leave on Thursday morning be there around 5:00pm. Keith

When I was messing around with my 46hv Eric told me not to expect color on the plug, instead make sure the plug is not chalky (too lean). For me the air/fuel screw really helped with throttle response when you go from idle to WOT.
Your quad was running good at sand fest right? What have you changed since that? Cams and race head? With those to changes I would expect you to be flowing more air so you would need to richen the carb, although 3 full turns of the needles is a huge adjustment.

That sounds just like the problems that I was having with my 46. I was also too rich but couldn't tell on the plugs. Don't get too frustrated with the carb because when you get it dialed in you will love it for sure.
You are more than welcome to come and hang out with us at DS day that is what the whole thing is about meeting new people.
As for the N2O I run a 20 shot with 11.5 to 1 and once we got my setup figured out it has been smooth sailing since.

I tried to call HPR today but there closed. I think Im having so much trouble with this is due to not really understanding it. Ive got it kinda figured out now. Im going out to Spencer creek after work to try and get it right. Theres a straight stretch of pavement that sees very little traffic. Hopefully I can get it run. Looking foward to meeting everyone this weekend should be a great time.
