Default 2003 Outlander backfiring

Went out on Sunday with a buddy, hit a couple of bogs, got stuck a couple of times but majority of riding on sandy dirt bush trails. Put on about 20 miles when the Outy wouldn't idle properly. Kept stalling but would start right up, just have to adjust the idling I thought. Later we were going fairly hard when the motor quit. I tried to start it, just turned over and over. Sat there for about 2 minutes max, turned it over and started, no problem. Off we go again, this cycle repeated itself about 6 more times in about two hours. I was worried that I had to leave it in the bush that night! I managed to drive it out and tried to drive it to buddy's house. Again I would get good power for about 10- 20 seconds then it would start backfiring and it would hesitate and would eventually stall. It got really bad at that point however. I had a quick look at it tonight, it started like normal. I changed the spark plug, increased the idle speed. I didn't have a chance to go for a burn to test it out. I doubt if it is spark plug problem. I don't know where to start troubleshooting. The air filter isn't new but I don't know what else it could be. This has been the only problem so far (1500 miles). Any tips out there?

There is a second intake hole in the airbox that needs to be filtered, its in the front, easy to spot. This causes raw dirt into the carb. I ran a concentrated synthetic fuel system cleaner through mine with some 91 octane chevron fuel, took it out and ran it pretty hard to make sure plenty of it went through the fuel system........seems to have solved the problem. Mine started with the idle, then backfired a couple of times. So far no more poblems. The 05's have the hole filtered now <sigh> how did they miss this??

Thanks for the info carider, I'll check that out tomorrow. If I can't figure it out, I'll get the dealer to check it out. Hopefully this problem is a warranty issue.
