Default DS650 has consumption

1st longdistance trail ride since buying 2000 DS650 from jetsnow600 (Sean) last year. Thing runs like a striped @ssed @pe. However, gas milege sucks!!! Went about 32 miles round trip & ran out (w/o) reserve turned on) during a short circle loop trip after we got back. Thats less than 10mpg Nothing over about 30 on a rocky trail off 108 from Niagra/Eagle Meadows to above Relief Resevoir & back. Runs great @ Sealevel & @ 8000'.

Has TM45 w/ Graydon exhaust & Sean says its jetted "fat", but not sure what exactly. Based on search, I'm going to have mech look @ float setting, pilot & main.

Anybody have any ideas??

I also meant to ask what the approx mpg would be w/ thw stock carb & what should it be w/ normal "non-racing" trail riding w the 45?

My last carb was a TM45 and I run a River Trip from my house at a pretty good pace. Now remember that I was running 11.5:1 w/exhaust, and I'm 310lbs. The trip is exactly 42miles round trip, and I lead on the way back. Was pretty much 4th and 5th all the way back. Had about a 1/4 to an 1/8th of a tank left.

Make sure that your jetting is right, and that your air filter is clean. Also check your compression. You should be in the 165 range +-

Let us know if you need some more trouble shooting.

I have made it in the the 60s or more on a few different occasions before having to swap to reserve w/my current setup. I haven't checked it the last couple of rides though. Should still be abouve 30 unless there was alot of idle time, and a real slow technical trail.

Well, I pulled the outer plug to look at it & it is REALLY Black & coated, so think that I am going to change plugs & move down a jetting size from whatever it has now, as soon as I get it apart. Local dealer (1 1/4 hrs away) wants $180 just to take it apart Guess I'll look at it myself initially.

Now I'm really confused Main looks like it is a 145 -- can't tell what the pilot says --last # is 5, but can't read B4 that. Certainly doesn't seem like that would be to rich @ higher altitude, certainly not @ lower, based on what others are saying they run.

Where's the needle?

Is the accelerator pump enabled?

I'ld go down two jet sizes with a black plug!

You may want to get it on a dyno. That way you know you are correct.

Scott up in Elk Grove at West Coast ATV may be your best shot. Not that far of a drive and I'm sure he can get you on the dyno. Tell him Mark told you to call. You may get Sabrina when you call. She can probably set-up an appt.

BTW, my 760 gets great milage. I'm amazed how much riding I can do before I have to fill up.

Seadog, I recently went on a 30 mile ride that took about 1 1/2 hours on rocky tight trails. I averaged probably 25mph and used around a 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 gallon with the stock carb jetted a little rich at around 4,500'. just flat land and a couple rolling hills.

DuneMe -- I talked to Scott but about a week out & then I need to leave it 4-5 days Would like to watch the process & learn as it is about a 2 1/2 hr round trip. I talked to Elliott @ RWR yesterday & I checked jets & needle last night/this morning. Looks like I have a 145 main, not sure about the primary as it looks like last # is a 5, but rest is scratched off, and a 96 needle (1 richer than standard) set on the 4th clip. Think Sean had this setup for Sand Mt (bike he took there in 2004), as the 145 would make sense. 4th clip would definately make it run richer @ altitude, as well as the fact that I need to drop down a couple sizes in the main @ 8000' (followin Hightower's writeup). I probably want to go up to a 150 at sealevel. Does this make sense???

Pump ISNOT enabled.

Think I'll get a couple of jets @ play w/ it alittle, then setup an appointment w/ Scott

Hmm primary is a 45. !!

So Jet Needle is 96 (rich) on 4th clip (rich), w/ a 45 primary (rich), w/ a 145 main (rich). Wonder why it was rich @ 8000' LOL Got a handful of primaries & mains , along w/ standard needle, coming from RWR
