Rod length difference???
#1
Is there any variation in rod length in the DS from one year to another? I just sold a 13:1 piston to a gentleman in Canada that came off my '05. It appears to protrude out of the cylinder a bit. It is more than can be overcome by thicker gaskets.
Any ideas?

I have never heard of any rod length differences. I know that the builders have different after market pistons . Some builders use bifferent base & head gaskets to make their pistons work. Also some have to relief cut/pocket cut the head for their piston to work.

That is true. I have heard of that. This is a TVI 13:1 piston by JE. I had it running in an '05 DS. One of my riding buddy's also had a similar piston in an '02 and it fit just fine. I never had to run any gaskets other than stock when I had it.
I want the guy to get what he paid for. I may have to buy it back ultimately if I don't figure this out.

Ron did he tell you that he is also using a stock base & head gasket? Did he say how far it sticks up out of the jug? He does have the piston facing the right direction? Just looking for a reason that the piston isn't working.

I haven't gotten a reply back from him yet to get anymore specifics than he sent in his first message.
He said it is sticking out a 1/4" to 3/8". I know when it was on my bike, the outside edge of the piston was recessed about 1/8" in the cylinder. But the peak of the dome stuck out about 5/16" or so. I am wondering if the peak is what he is referring to.
Once I find out whether rod lengths varied from year to year or not, I can go to the next thing.
I guess the crank pin could be at a different place as well. That would cause the wrist pin to have to move also.
The problem I have with all of this is that if either case were true, it would be a different displacement. The way he described it, I would almost think he had a stroker and didn't know it. Also, if the rod length were different, the jugs themselves wouldn't be interchangeable from year to year. If the rod is longer, so must the jug be.
None of this makes sense until I get more info from the buyer I guess.

We are in the clear. The piston was put into place backwards. He changed the piston without removing the head so he was slipping the whole jug and head right over the top. It wouldn't seat of course. He got it figured out and the beast is alive!

Ron I'm glad that everything worked out. I guess with doing it that way, he didn't check valve clearance. I guess he had stock cam & valves, if not that was taking a big chance on everything working right. Cool everything worked out.
