Default Splitting the case

I am sick to my stomach. I have parts in little cup that I marked, everywhere. The engine is in pieces all over my livingroom and I'm kind of freaking out. I hope I put everything back together correctly.
I don't know what to do about the cams. There is more rust now that they are out. I think I am going to have to take them to a machine shop and have them looked at and polished?

Mud don't rush it.. take your time. Don't think about getting it for whatever race you want to attend. It will cost you more in the long haul. How much rust is on the cam? If it is surface rust you can prob get a a polish wheel for a dremel and buff it right out. How did you get rust on the cam?

I cannot imagine how any rust could be on anything under the head cover, its a constant slinging coat of oil everywhere in there, the oil pump delivers oil directly to the cam bridge journals and it runs out and poors everywhere is slung all over by the gears and chain. that rust is odd indeed. I would buff it off with a wire wheel and make sure the there is none anywhere that contacts moving parts, and move on. maybe something went wierd with the black oxide coating at the cam factory, causing the rust?

Um... I did drown it a few months back. I flipped off the track into a canal. I was fine but the oil looked like milk. I changed the oil 4 times in a row right away. Cost me a small fortue. That's what must of caused it. Glad I found it. I will do like said and clean it up.
Should I be cleaning the inside of the case and everything of oil? There are some bolt holes that have oil in them. Shouldn't they be free of oil before I put the bolts back?
Also, will locktight work if there is oil present on the applied surface?

I am assuming the rust isn't on the lobes. Now would be a good time to use them as cores and get a set of cams that match your riding style.

Saw the pic.. most likely you can clean that up. A wire brush and some emory cloth you should be good to go.

If your camera is digital it should have a macro function, that will allow you to take pictures up close (normally an image or icon on the camera as a flower).

Hey mud,

It is VERY important that you get all the oil out of the bolt holes before you put it all back together. When you go to torque the bolts they will hydraulic lock and give you a false torque reading and the bolts wont tighten up correctly. Man it is vital to get all the oil out, hate to see something small cost you so much later and believe me it will. I just spent 1500 bux on a second rebuild and the first one only had 1 ride in it.

Later,
Chiknhawk

10-4 on the oil in the bolt holes C-hawk. Talked to a few people over the weekend and learned a little bit. I learned that I really have a chance at winning one of these races on a smaller machine. A friend loaned me his Warrior 350. I put some paper plates on it and held it wide open. Started dead last ( I asked another guy who was on one what gear he started his in-mistake) I passed up to 2nd place and started to run out of energy. Wound up being passed down to 5th out of 11.
I have a whole new reason to get my DS back together. I need to sell it and get something different. There was no way I would have fit through like I did yesterday. I am very proud of my DS, but I want to win. I am looking at an 05 YFZ for $4,000.
Entomber,I will clean up the cam today and wait until tomorrow for the parts to come in. Looking around my house is very intimidating with all these parts and pieces.
