Cam/Piston Question
#1
I have been thinking about some cams, and a piston. I've got a few questions. First my current setup: HMF, K&N, HPR Full Race Porting. Carb is coming soon. I figure that cams, and piston would be the next step. Will doing just cams be worth the money or will I need to do a piston to really see some difference? I would rather not get into the jug if cams alone will give a significant increase. Should I even be concerned about that? What kind of reliability will I be looking at if I did do get into the jug for the piston? I go back and forth as to whether it is worth the risk? What are the common problems with a new piston? Are there any issues with the cams? I cannot sacrifice reliability as I am too heavy for any of my crew to pull back to camp, and my DS seems to be the tow vehicle when anyone breaks down. I know there are a lot of questions here so any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks for any responses.

First, there is no reliability problems with adding a aftermarket piston. You wont have many cam choices with the stock piston, alot of them wont clear. Most cams worth having will need a little extra compression to help the bottom end. If you want pump gas, stay in the 11-1 range, and pick your poison on cams. But do both.

Fatholly,
My $0.02. I would install the featherlite 14:1 piston with a set of HP3 cams. If you do that I think you will be 1 port job away from a 70 hp stockbore bike.................assuming you eventually go with their latest generation porting. I am assuming you have a Lectron coming? 46 or 48? The HP3 cams are best suited for the big guys and I have it on good authority that they perform really well. They probably would be better suited to one port job below the full CNC.
Always looking to the future my friend!
