help with horsepower
#1
I am wondering about exhaust slip ons. I have a 2000 DS completely stock. I want to start adding bolt ons but I have a family which produces a tight budget. Anyway, I called on-dunes and spoke to Glenn who is very knowledgeable and wants to help. I was told about a kit that would cost right around $1200.00 which will include the Lectron 44 Carb, ported intake, k&n filter and slip on exhuast (HPR Top Gun w/ discs) to keep it quiet, but add power (I am restricted locally). Anyway, it all sounds great and will probably get me in the mid 50's for horsepower, but I do not exactly have $1200.00 laying around for pleasure...........so, I would like to get some opinions on endcaps (do they make a big difference, do they keep the noise db down and will they allow enough flow for a lectron 44 and ported intake). I plan on definately getting the lectron 44 and the ported intake, but can I get a slip on or endcap that will allow sufficient breathing room for my carb and intake? I am also trying to find the carb used possibly on ebay or something. If anyone has any info on a used lectron please pm me. I am looking forward to opinions and facts. Thanks and I hope to get some feedback shortly.

First the end cap is pretty loud. I don't know specific decibles but I doubt if it would pass a sound inspection. Second there are less expensive ways to go for the carb. The Lectron would be my carb of choice but a TM45 for example is going for around $225 on ebay right now. The porting will cost you about $150 from either Ron Woods or HPR. That leaves you with a pipe... you can get a HMF with the quiet core for around $235. $60 for the K&N with outer wear and you are looking at about 50hp acording to HPR's dyno test. Thats about $670 by my elementary school math. No, with a budget like yours (and mine for that matter) you are not going to be out drag racing with the big boys... but you could bump up your power significantly for far less. The setup On-dunes is pitching you is a really nice one. I am actually waiting for my tax return to buy the HV48 Lectron, and a piston and cams from HPR... so to say that is is inferior in any way would be misleading. In fact most of the dyno results I have seen really point to HPR products as the best around. I am just saying that you do have other options.
Actually if I was you, I would start with a pipe, K&N, porting and jetting first. You will save yourself some dough and it is all stuff that can be built on in the future when you funds build back up. The stock carb is plenty good for the basic mods, and you will feel and incredible difference. I currently have an HMF pipe, HPR Full race ported intake, K&N, and jetting and I absolutly love it... total cost about $450. I'm not saying I don't want more, but for now it is great. I can keep up with anyone in the dunes, I do get smoked at the hill though... thats whats that tax return is all about.
