go to a office supply store and they sell scales that go up to 5 pounds there like 27 bucks here, that is what will get you going if you get serious they sell one that goes up to 20 pounds but it cost a 100 bucks, then start puting things on the scale you will be shocked. if your machine is a 00 those little triangle motor mounts can be replace easy enough the bommb dealer has new ones for like 7 bucks each there now aluminum, my new ones cost 5 oz. old ones were about a pound actually14.1 oz. start by putting the bolts on the scale and you will be shocked again, they add up, the ones that hold the foot pegs on seem reasonable for strength, but the same one are holding the plastic on, way over kill. then to get real serious look at the honda and yamaha, they have bolts that have the heads relieved from the factory, start drilling it all adds up. oh and the hardware store sells plastic bolts and nuts holding plastic with plastic seems fine. wouldn't recommend them for the pegs though

yea , I would say extreme is the word for forcefed's chop. notice he has even removed the entire rear shock mount . must be running it as a drag only hard tail set up. getting rid of the "giant" factory air box would also be most beneficial .

I personally havent had great luck with plastic bolts but aluminum works great for me and they are REALY lite. check this site out but be warned.... its addictive! you will have to copy and paste it into your browser because as usual the http option in this site never works----> http://www.fastener-express.com/inde...S&Category=218

Those are sweet. Do you know what kind of strength aluminum bolts and washers have? Like how much torque could you put on them?

People want to know how to save weight on a DS but when it comes right down to it they really dont want to save as much weight as the average guy can save with just merely unbolting this and unbolting that. But when you want to get serious with weight savings it takes all the necessary steps that 1bigsdsrider just mentioned and of course that means cutting on the frame. But if you just want to act like your saving weight just take of the fenders and heel guards and go riding. Have a nice day,

PS: I'll just keep riding my little ole 300lb bolt-on bike out into the sunset......
I would like to get it down there but I still want to hill climb and play out in the dunes I want it lighter and still want it to be just as functinal as it is now. If I had the money I would have the drag bike and one to play with and it would be fine but I don't have the money so just the weight loss will be great for me. You guys have givin me a lot to start with and it will take me awhile just to get there so thanks for all the help.

you cant tighten an aluminum bolt like you do a steel one but they arent wimpy either. they would be great for mounting your plastic or radiator or coils or cdi box, but again I wouldnt use them on anything with tremendous shear force like a footpeg. they look nice too

Sound like it would be easier to hunt on E bay for an extra frame and have the summer time to lighten one up, I wonder how much would a modified frame drop that still tuff enough for play riding?? that frame is way over done Vs a LT500 frame, Kudos to Bombardier for over kill, and how much lighter is say plus 2 after market swing arm?? are the 05 and 06 A arms Aluminum now?

Dont know how much weight difference between the swingarms, but I can tell you that Sandbomber proved to all of us that its possible to get a stock chassis down to 315lbs with all the lightweight parts. The best part about this whole DS diet is the fact that all of these parts are now available to the general public....it aint nothin but money....cant take it with ya,

Yea I work with a guy that said he replaced all of it bolts on his snow machine with titanium bolts and after all was said and done just with the bolts he dropped 200lbs. That is pretty significant. Thanks again Guys
