Axle bearings?
#1
Hey guys, I was out riding my '02 DS650 a little today, and I start hearing this noise coming from out back, I think? Well it was sort of a metal sound, and everytime it happened (every 10 sec. or so) the quad would jolt and buck a little. I take it straight home, and the sprocket, and brakes are real hot. I jack it up, and move the rear wheels around, and my axle can move like an inch or so, like it can jiggle around? I'm pretty sure this is my axle bearings, correct? Just wanted to see what you guys think it is. I mean it can move around so much that my chain will be tight, then so loose it would pop right off. This thing is driving me crazy! To top it all off, I'm moving the axle around, seeing what's up, and theres a big nail in my decently new, rear holeshot tire! Ugh... Thanks for the help guys, sorry If anything I said didn't make sense. Preciate it! -JW

Sounds like rear axle bearings for sure, make sure your new bearings are well packed with grease( I use a marine grease incase any water gets in) don't ride your bike until this problem is fixed. Every year your bearings should be checked and regreased so this will not happen.

Yep, I normally get 'em checked out, but I've only had this bike for like 3 months, It can't be ridden now, and I wouldn't even think to ride it, in the state it is in. Thanks for the help!

Yeah diff the axle bearings, I just had mines fail on me..... the good new is it's really not a hard job just trying to get the races out are a *****, but you might not need them. take everything apart and see, if you races have and scuff or marks you will need to change them if they do. I used a slide hammer with claws to pull mines out, Installing new ones you have to heat the bearing case up in a oven for like 20 mins and put the new races in a freezer for about the same time, then drive them in with a brass punch. The axle bearing closes to the spocket might need to be pressed on with a hydrualic press, (mines did) or find another way to push the bearing on. These are roller bearing part number is 32008X and the races should come with the bearing, the seal are double lip oil seals and the size is 40x68x10 the last number is the thickness 10's are hard to find, if you can get 2 great if not then don't use anything less then a 8. You should be able to get these parts from any bearing shop or Mc Master Carr, they have the bearings and races but not the seals, I have a brand new set of bearings, races, and seals if you need them. Hope this helps.....PEACE

well I just had the same exact thing happen to me and if it is wiggling but the chain is still staing on it most likely means that one bearing is shot and my guess is its the one next to the sprocket. The oil seals may need replacing but make sure both are fine and pack them really well with grease when putting them back in and make sure everything is tight when it is back or else the beaings will be chewed up in a sec. also check the wear ring it is a very thin piece of metal that goes around the sprocket and brake hubs. I think my bearing had gone due to horrible stock skid plated and my bearing and oil seal had a big chunk taken out of them. If you want a new carrier that can hold 4 bearings which will hold up better when trail and mud riding here you go.
