Default CARB HELP in the worst way.

I recently purchased a 05 ds650x, it came with a yoshi slip on, and then i added a k&N, it hadent been jetted so i took out the 165 and tried a 170 and 175, the needle is on the 4th posistion and i have tried about every combination with the air/fuel screw.

Symptoms: when lugging in 2,3,4gear the engine misses and sputters for the lack of a better term, but WOT it runs fine. Just that 2nd, 3rd, 4th gear in the low rpm range its not right.

It ran perfect untill i added the k&n and the jet. By the way the Needle was in the 5th posistion from factory should that be right?

Can anyone tell me What i can do to fix this.

Throttle position determines which circuit is working...not rpm. So when you say, just lugging along..how open is the throttle? If its barely open, up to 1/8 open, then try the mixture screw, and go out. If you get to 4 turns out from seated, you need the next up pilot jet.
You say you tried every position of the mixture screw...does it make any difference where its at?will it get worse? If you try just lugging..and pull the choke on..does it respond better?

dunerider's settings are the norm, I would try the 4 turns from seated on idle mix screw, needle on 4th (which is the stock setting, at least on all the ones I've seen), and a 175 main since you are probably around 1000 feet I'd guess in Kentucky. these are common settings for piped ds's with K&N at or near sea level.

two things to check if problems persist - first be certain the diaphram lip is in its groove all the way around under the carb cap, this has caused many a issue for lots of folks after chaning needle settings. also be sure spring above needle is in place and all that jazz. second, be sure you changed the main jet and not the starter jet by mistake, the main jet is up inside the brass tube, the starter jet is right next to it and has accidentally been changed by mistake a time or two in the past, they look identical except for their numbers stamped on the head.

Default CARB HELP in the worst way.

the sluggish feeling is as follows:

im going up a slight incline 2nd gear at slow speeds, (lugging aroung) bout 1/8 throttle i would say, now i give 1/4 throttle and the sluggish or missing in the engine starts, during this time of missing i can give it WOT and it still continues this missing for 2 sec. untill it gains rpm then it goes no problem. it also does this in 3rd gear etc.

I havent tried this with the choke on, ill do that tommorow and see what happens. i did double check that i put the right jet in, it is, the top is also sealed in its groove.

If it does better with the choke on what does that mean?

If i need a larger pilot jet, What size should i get. What is stock size for an 05

If it improves by using the choke...its too lean.
Are you at 4 turns out on the mixture screw? If so, thats about the limit of adjustability for the pilot jet. If you get to 4 turns out, and it still needs to be richer...pull out the pilot jet, and youll see a nymber stamped on it..youll need the next size bigger.
