How freely should the rear axle spin?
I was installing my 520 chain/sprocket setup last night and had the chance to spin thre rear axle with nothing on it (wheels/tires, chain, brake caliper, etc) and something sure doesn't feel right. It spins smoothly (no grinding, or noise) but just feels really tight. If I grab the wheel hub and give it a good twist it comes to an immediate stop and takes quite a bit of force just to get it moving. Is this normal or do I have a problem?

DS..I'm far from an expert, but I just changed my bearings/seals and before I put the tires.wheels back on, I thought the same thing, didn't seem to spin as easily as I would have thought. My buddy said it seemed all good and when I finished her up, with rims on, it spun as good or better than his newer DS..You should be OK.

I guess it depends on the hand that twists it. I tighten it until I have no more side play in the axle, then just a little more. This should make it spin a little if you twist it hard. It wont spin freely though, as the grease should be packed in there good enough to slow it down. I would say your ok, as long as when you twist it, it isnt hard to do. It should move easily, with about................oh................rrrrrrrrrrr gggggggg that much strength, lol!

Well I'm happy to say I found the problem. The axle nut was on WAY too tight. I backed it out about a 1/4 turn and man what a difference. The dealer that greased the bearings under recall about a year ago was the last to touch it. So much for putting your faith in a certified Bomb mechanic.
