Default 400 Max or 500 X2

I know I'm in the Bombi forum, but I will ask this in Polaris as well. Price being the same, which machine would be the better way to go? The Polaris is a 500 and EFI, but I've heard the Bombi was much more comfortable in two up(which I might do a lot of...maybe). Will the 400 have enough power? Is it as comfy a ride as the Polaris? I just want honest opinons, no flaming please. The machine will be used mainly for recreational trail riding, no huge mudding or water and maybe some work around the house, ie. plowing.

If you were talking one seat machines, tough call as they are both excellent machines ( the two best in the 400-500cc class IMO) As far as two up, the Outlander Max has no equal. With the Max if you don't want the seat on the back, just pop it off and it's hard to tell it from a regular one up machine.

With the X2 you are stuck with a goofey box on the back all of the time. This box is quite useless for pure recreational (trail) riding as everything would have to covered and/or strapped down. With my Max, we have a weatherproof Kimpex box on the back for all of the weekends necessities -- everything is kept clean and dry.

Ride quality is very close to the same for the two, both are very good. As far as power; 2,650 km of two up riding in every possible condition the last 11 months and we have never powered it out yet -- you just won't win that many drag races. I would think the X2 would be very comparable in the power department.

I don't have anything against Polaris, might have bought one if I did'nt have to take the wife along all of the time, but they just missed the boat when it comes to the two up machines. The X2 seems to be a jack of all trades and a master of none, where the Max is a pure recreational, one/two up machine with comfort being the number one priority.

I have the Polaris ATP 500, its what evoled into the X2. It has the dump bed on the back and for a lot of the stuff I haul around, like my welder and generator, I can just throw them in the bed. For a utility quad it really is hard to beat the bed. Plus you can have a tail gate party. It has a closed box under the front rack which is really handy with out losing any rack space.

One feature I do not think gets enough attention is that unlike most quad the ATP and the X2s have a rear differential with an electric locker. Its really amazing how smooth and easy steering it is even loaded down not having a live axle all time. Its real nice to ride on the lawn and in front of the house and not tear up the ground. I will never own a utility quad without a dump bed and differential.

The X2 has these features plus IRS, FI, and 2up capacity.

I've had my ATP 500 to Sand Mountian and it was great for my wife to cruise the dunes with. Being able to throw the ice chest in the bed was real handy also. We have over 200 hours and 1,500 miles on ours without a single problem. The only thing I did was split the brakes because I hate single lever brakes on quads.

BUT, like balgonieman said, the bed is not as good as racks for some people, and I think the Outlander is a much better 2up machine. If I was looking to use it mainly for 2up trail riding I would pick the Outlander Max, mainly utility the X2.

I think both are great machines, but I would not say the X2 is master of none, it is a great utility quad that can be used as a 2up.

Both appear to be excellent machines.
I have ridden both. personally I would be comparing the outty 500 EFI to the X2 500EFI, it is a more accurate comparison that way, but if I were to compare the 400 to the X2 I would say this

Outlander Advantages
HO Rotax engine. (personal preferance, but I am a big fan of Rotax) this engine is well powered I have ridden it with 400lbs of people on it. no issues
Comfortable seating (even someone who does not like riding (like my grandmother) will be comfortable)
TTI rear suspension. All outlanders have it it is a huge selling feature in my opion I have seen it in action and LIKE IT
Visco Lok front Differential (polaris differental is definatly good! proably 2nd best on the market.) visco lok is the best. (my opinion)
3 year warranty ( included with the bike) HUGE plus in my opinion
Headlamps (high beams are in the main beams, this means when you have items on the front rack at night the high beam light does not reflect back in your face. (on polaris it is in the handle bars. great if nothing on front rack. REAL PAIN IN THE *** if you are carrying a cooler. can't use high beam.
Ground clearance. Outlander 400 has almost an inch more clearance than the X2 (outlander 500 has 3 inches more clearance)

X2 advantages
500cc EFi engine (efi will start nicer) (outlander 500 is EFi also)
Folding rear seat (outlander seat is large and there is nowhere to put it on the bike. you either decide to take it with you or leave it home, you don't switch mid trail.
AWD system is selectabe to 1wheel drive, 2 wheel drive or on demand all wheel drive. I have used this system, and it is solid. the one wheel drive avoids
tearing up the lawn. if you are going to be driving on your manacured property with it you will really appreciate this feature. if not you will never use it.
Independant rear suspension. (not TTI) but solid

in my opinion the Outlander is the overall better bike. But the X2 is a CLOSE 2nd. it is a SOLID bike! for what you are saying you are going to be using it for I don't think you will be dissapointed with either bike. have your passenger sit on both to see what they like better for comfort. then pick the bike that you feel good on and that you like best. they are both really good bikes and either will suit your needs well so I wouldn;t worry too much about it. just pick the one that speaks to you.

X2 advantages

hi new to this forum, excellent info btw.Just got the 400 xt 2 seater,i live in ontario as well and i did a bit of shopping eg: the cat trv 2 str doesn't have the back racks thats a option brp does. The 2 str polaris just plain looked ugly and uncomfortable.Another thing i didn't know was that those storage/seats that strap on too the back are illegal here,so armed with all this info and the warranty can-am offers that was my choice, like i said new too this.first 4 wheeler so i'll see how it goes. good luck

Cool, I'm sure up in Beaverton there are lots of good trails for you to take the outlander on! Are you a member of the OFATV up there? I hear OFATV has a great network of trails up your way.
