Gas leak on 2006 Outlander 800 XT
#2
Today, when I walked into the garage, I smelled strong odor of gas. Great!! I found a 6 in. puddle of gas under the gas tank out the brand new outty 800. I have 6 miles and 1 hr. and 25 mins. on the machine. I called my dealer and he said things like, well it got warm today, and, is your garage warm? My head was shaking and about to pop. I said it doesn't matter what ......you will need to fix this. WHATEVER it takes. Whether its 500 degrees or 100 below. JUST GET IT FIXED!! Upon looking into it, it looks like the gasket in the sending unit is faulty. You can't see much, but when I wipe it dry, it gets wet with gas . There are about 6 or 8 hex screws around the sending unit. You can only see about 3 or 4 of them. And it looks like a major operation to get the tank out. The dealer says he will prolly need to order a new tank. Might take a couple weeks.......(now i'm steamin') Can-am, Don't let me down now?

First I've heard of this, probably a fluke. No worries, you're under warranty so won't cost you anything but two weeks does suck. This isn't the dealers fault so I wouldn't get TOO fired up with them, you'll need their help getting this expidited.

Thats odd I know on my ds 650 on warm days it would build up pressure in my gas tank so I would shut the gas off at the fuel petcock and then loosen my gas cap and it stopped so you may want to give that a try as it might be coming out the overflow.

Man that's not good at all, you haven't even got to ride it yet.
Off topic, fyi, the first time pressure built up in my tank we heard a faint sound but couldn't tell where it was coming from. Thought it was out in the woods around the meadow we were in. Finally got down right next to the quad and it was louder. Cracked the gas cap, heard pressure release and the vent sound stopped. The quad has to be fairly hot for that to happen though.
Let's hope the gasket problem is the only one you have.

Kawiyowee...had the exact same thing happen to me...hot day...long ride...strange noise...cracked the cap...no more noise. This issue about a puddle of gas under the machine is the first time I have ever heard about this. I have been to more than a few 'other' atv sites and never heard about this. I agree with the post that says "dont get upset at the dealer"...it IS obviously a factory issue....however, i would tell the dealer..."Git'er dun."

I think I would first make sure it was leaking before I went much farther with it. I could see if it was filled up before it was delivered, that it might have been filled a little to much and the bouncing around in the back of a truck could slosh some gas out through the vent. Or if like most dealers they are gassing them up out of gas cans since allot of them don't have on sight fuel storage and pumps. If they missed the opening and splashed gas every where it could have got caught up in the shielding under the machine and later made its way down to the ground. I think I would burn some fuel out of it first and then see if it is still leaking after that. Its the first I have herd of a fuel leak also. If it was a new machine right out of the box then its fuel system was dry until the dealer did there prep for delivery to you. I know some dealers around here put them out on there showrooms still unprepared with out any fuel in them. I would imagine the dealer would have never know it was leaking unless it was prepped and had fuel for test driving prior to your purchase of the unit. I am not trying to say its not broke just that I can see some other possibilities that could factor into making a 6 inch puddle of gas show up under a new machine, that might be worth giving some thought.
The noise pastor and Kawiyowee are talking about I think is a pretty common thing on the Outy, mine has only done that out on long Colorado trail rides. My dads was doing that funky noise first and I thought it sounded like a servo motor engaging. It took us a while to figure out that it was a pressure build up in the tank. We were up about 12000 foot and both our machines were making that noise when we figured out it was the fuel tanks. We loosened up the gas caps and released the pressure and it stopped. I think that noise might be more prominent out there since we are constantly changing altitude somewhat rapidly, causing more pressure changes on the tank in addition to the heat factor.

Today I took my Outy 800 back to the dealer. The service man who woors on it just lives around the corner from where I live. I have rode over to his house a couple of times. he very nice to me, and I never get upset with him. I wish this problem would go away on its own, maybe I should have put a few more miles on it first. He had sugested to me that pressure might have built up in the tank so I loosened it up and tried that but I didn't seem to matter. He had origionally only put about a half a tank of gas in it. It had sat in the garage for a couple of days when I noticed the leak. Prolly only a spoonful of gas a day is coming out. Yesterday the was no visible sign of a leak. But the gas was running down the length of the frame on the bottom side and dripped up in front between the two front wheels. This morning, just hoping this problem would have dried up and fixed itself??, I couldn't find and visible sign of a leak. But sticking my finger up in the bottom hole in that black plastic pan the tank sits in, and my finger was wet with gas. I assume the gas has found another spot to leak on instead of the garage floor. Since this is fuel injected, there is no fuel shut-off valve. You just can't see enough to follow the gas line back to the tank to see a quick fix. He said he would tear it down today and figure out what parts he would need to fix it. Probably a gasket, not a tank. And he said the manual says the tank comes out the side without a whole lot of trouble??, we'll see. He said I might get it back towards the end of the week, if he can get the parts in. They are pretty good to me over there. He gave me a 10 foot long banner to hang up in my garage that says Can-am. They don't handle any clothing, or i would have got a shirt or a hat. And they gave me this nifty little key chain. I'm sure they will git it fixed up for me. But all day yesterday....I just RODE IT !!! Sweet, sweet, sweet

You rode it with a leaky gas tank? Sounds like maybe the leak slowed enough to possibly evaporate before it made it to the floor?? I wonder if you had drained the tank and left it open to dry then filled it again maybe the gaskets would have had a chance to expand a bit? Just something to throw out there.
